    On DAB Digital Radio

You need a new radio to receive DAB digital radio. Your existing set will not decode digital signals unless it carries the DAB logo (standing for Digital Audio Broadcasting). Analogue sets (i.e. FM/AM) often have a digital display or tuner but this isn't the same and doesn't mean they can receive DAB digital radio. DAB digital radio sets are available through hi-fi and car audio dealers, high street retailers and department stores and online retailers. For more information see our digital radio website.

    Listening abroad

You can listen to Radio 4 online anywhere in the world, but you will not be able to pick up BBC stations broadcasting on FM,MW, LW and DAB very far from UK shores. They are funded by the UK licence fee and the BBC is not permitted to re-broadcast them from other countries. However, in some areas close to the UK (such as Ireland, France, Denmark, Belgium and Holland) it is possible to receive Radio 4 on 198 kHz long wave.

    Radio 4 multicast trial

The BBC & ITV intend to test the technical possibilities of streaming more of their TV channels via broadband. We intend to Multicast these. This should result in a higher quality viewer experience. We are running this technical trial to seek some feedback about the quality and availability of these TV channels. Visit the BBC Multicast trial web site to find out more and volunteer to take part in the Multicasting trial. Back to the top
