TYPES OF HOE

The Swoe
  • An L-shaped hoe good for perennial weeds
  • Matthew recommends working backwards with all hoes
  • the best time to hoe is when there are no weeds
    The Dutch or Push Hoe
  • has a thin blade to cut through the stems of weed seedlings
  • all hoes should be kept sharp
  • hoe when it's dry - if the soil is wet then the cut stems can root
    The Draw Hoe
  • can be used for weeding but is better for earthing up
  • all hoes should, of course, be the right length for a weary gardener to lean on
