Question from Juliette Gayton: I brought back some seeds of a tea bush from Sri Lanka seventeen years ago. It's done well and produces shoots and even flowers. Is it self fertile or will I have to find another tea plant in order to pollinate it?
Bob: The tea plant is a camellia and I think they're self fertile.
Roy: Not just any old camellia will produce tea leaves, the one that is used by the growers is not one you'd want as an ornamental. The tea plant is Camellia sinensis and has small, almost puny, single white flowers. It's sometimes grown in botanic gardens and arboretums in this country.
