Valentine's days past

2006

Tom and Brenda were the unexpected beneficiaries of Kenton's well-intentioned but chaotic plans for Kathy. At The Bull, Jolene and Clarrie had to do the cooking for the Valentine night's meals because Freda and Bert were in India.

2005

Sid bought Jolene a bunch of pink roses and a beautiful gold chain and heart, engraved "From Sid to the love of his life". At The Bull all the ladies were given a red rose. It was a good night at the pub but Sid left Jolene to cope while he looked after Kathy, who was still vulnerable after being raped only two months earlier.

2004

Usha had a wonderful romantic day. She received a card, then Ashok arrived with a huge bunch of lilies and a box of Underwoods' Belgian chocolates. They had dinner at Botticelli's, during which he gave her a pair of beautiful earrings.

By contrast, Elizabeth's day was a bit of a wash-out as she was working: at Lower Loxley they had a Valentine's Ball, price £125 per head.

The Bull held a Valentine's Night featuring a romantic quiz and a special menu.

2003

Brian and Jennifer were still trying to mend their marriage. Brian had ordered flowers but cancelled them when Jennifer announced she wanted to treat it as any other day. Nonetheless, the florist delivered them in error. Brian was mortified but Jennifer managed to thank him for the thought.

Eddie, Clarrie, Mike and Betty made up a foursome at the Valentine's do at The Feathers.

Roy bought a locket for Hayley.

2002

Sid sent Jolene a large card and asked her to a Valentine's dance at the County Hotel in Borchester; a slap up dinner with live music. While there he asked her to marry him and she accepted.

2001

Fallon and Ed stole a load of Valentine cards and sent them to inappropriate people. They chose a risqué one for Tim and a lovey-dovey one for Janet which they signed "Mr. November - small but perfectly formed". Sid was alarmed to receive an explicit card from a mystery admirer. Jolene recognised Fallon's handwriting and quietly explained to Fallon how upset Sid had been.

During the hunt, Oliver's horse pulled up lame and Caroline rode slowly back with him. He mentioned that he had received a Valentine's card. Caroline had received two. Later Oliver admitted to sending one, but the other was a puzzle. When it transpired that Caroline didn't send Oliver's, they realised they had been having their legs pulled but agreed that the sentiment was still appropriate.

2000

The Bull had a Valentine's promotion: couples got two drinks for the price of one, although Sid was not enthusiastic.

Bert gave Freda Spring flowers that he had grown himself.
