Adam comes out

When Adam returned to Ambridge in 2003, none of his family knew he was gay. In fact, he received so many calls from his friend Maggie that Jennifer began to assume that she was the reason he had come home.

However when she broached the subject Adam quickly confessed that it was not Maggie but Alex - Alexander - who had broken his heart, three years previously.

Jennifer was slightly reserved and Adam wondered if she felt let down. Not let down, said Jennifer, but left out. Adam being gay was not a problem for Jennifer, but that he hadn't told her earlier was.

Just a couple of days later, Peggy popped into Home Farm. She had been worrying that Adam seemed to be lacking a social life (i.e. a girlfriend) and Peggy had someone in mind. Jennifer began to get embarrassed for her mother as well as her son, but Adam grasped the nettle. While thanking his grandmother for having his best interests at heart, he informed her that he was gay.

A flustered Peggy left. When she got back to the Lodge, she tried to talk the problem through with Jack, blaming the problems on Adam's childhood which had turned him gay. Reassuring Jack told her not to worry. As soon as he met the right girl everything would change.

But it wasn't telling Peggy that Adam had found daunting. It took him another two months of hesitation before he was prepared to admit to Brian that the gossip was true. Adam's uncertainties were justified. Brian never became entirely comfortable with having a gay step-son.
