HOME IMPROVEMENT AND DIY
British people have a unique obsession with housing as home improvement, DIY especially has become part of daily culture. The popular explanation for this is that home owners want to increase the value of their homes but this is only part of the explanation.
Laurie Taylor is joined by Dr Maggie Gregory, Lecturer and Research Fellow at the school of Social Sciences Cardiff University, whose new research investigates social attitudes towards DIY: why more than ever are we taking it upon ourselves to do DIY; how do attitudes to the relative demands of the work differ between men and women; and how does our appreciation of home improvement affect our relationship with builders and plumbers?
CARIBBEAN LANGUAGES IN BRITISH SCHOOLS
Laurie Taylor is joined by Gus John, Visiting Professor of Education, University of Strathclyde to look at the battle which has taken place over the years between Caribbean languages and Standard English and how he believes deeply ingrained assumptions about class and language have worked to the disadvantage of Caribbean heritage children in British schools.
