On Midweek this week:-
VICTORIA COREN
Victoria Coren is the presenter for a new six-part series for BBC2 - Balderdash and Piffle. It explores the hidden histories behind words, and recruits the nation's help to try and solve some of the most intriguing mysteries of the English language. The first episode goes out at on Monday 2 January on BBC2. A book accompanies the series: Balderdash & Piffle, by Alex Games, is published by BBC Books, at £12.99.
JOHN HOWARD
John Howard is a singer/songwriter. Back in the 1970s he made an album called Kid in a Big World. Last year the great lost album was found by a small record company who re-released it to huge acclaim. This has reignited his musical career and he now has a new album - As I Was Saying - which will be released in January 2006. Both albums are available on RPM Records. He will be playing gigs in London in January.
JOHN HARE
John Hare is Founder of The Wild Camel Protection Foundation. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Explorers Club of America.
He has just returned from an expedition/survey of the wild Bactrian camel in the Gobi Desert in China, an area he first visted in 1999. There he discoverd the illegal use of cyanide to extract gold from the rock, and witnessed the devastating effect this has had on the 'naive' population of wildlife.
DAVE HEELEY
Dave Heeley was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa and went blind in his teens.
He works as an ambassador and fundraiser for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. He has completed four major marathon events this year and has raised over £10,000 for the charity. He has several events planned in 2006, the charity's 75th anniversary year.
