On Midweek this week:-
SIMON MAYOR
Simon Mayor is regarded as one of the country's leading mandolin players. He celebrates the season with the CD: Winter with Mandolins (CDACS 015) - a mix of evocative winter music and carols. He is also about to undertake a UK tour, along with Hilary James.
SIR ALAN WEST
Admiral Sir Alan West is the First Sea Lord. He has spent the majority of his career at sea serving in 14 different ships and commanding three of them. In 1980, he took command of the frigate HMS ARDENT taking the ship to the Falkland Islands in 1982 where she was sunk in the successful retaking of the Islands. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
He reviews the Year of the Sea, Trafalgar 2005.
LESLIE DEP
Leslie Dep's year has been split between his regular job - as a quantity Surveyor - and his part time role working for the charity Hela Sarana. Based in the UK, but operating in Sri Lanka, the charity has spent much of the year designing and building low-cost houses in the flood-devastated regions. The first phase of 50 houses were handed over in October, and work is underway on the next 50.
PETER ELLIOTT
As an aspiring young actor Peter Elliott auditioned for one of the ape roles in the Tarzan film Greystoke. He did extensive research at London Zoo observing the movement and behaviour of apes and this led to him becoming an animal movement choreographer. He has since translated their characteristics on to the screen for films including Gorillas In The Mist.
He has now choreographed a theatre production of The Jungle Book, which runs at The UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, London until 28 January 2006.
