"Shafted: The Media, The Miners’ Strike and The Aftermath" edited by Granville Williams is published by the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom.

ITV Results

ITVChairman of ITV, Michael Grade announced today that profits at ITV were down 40% on the previous year and to compensate he plans to cut 600 more jobs. Steve discusses the results with media analyst Matthew Horsman.

Democracy and Independent Journalism

Reading NewspapersThis week in the House of Commons MP Denis MacShane raised concerns about the connection between democracy and independent journalism which he believes to be under threat in the UK. He discusses his views on the erosion of the print media and the future for local newspapers.

Is optimistic news the future?

SmileysYesterday, in his first piece as editor of The Evening Standard, Geordie Greig said that that "From today this newspaper takes a fundamentally optimistic view of life" and went on to say that the newspaper was going to be "life affirming". But will good news sell? Ann Leslie joins Steve to proffer her views.

Comments on Today's Show

The Miners' Strike:
I was disappointed to hear no investigation of the conspiracy theory that appears on many blogs (e.g. Simon Pirani's) that the BBC revesed footage of the Orgreave riot in order to make it look as if the Police were responding to the miners' violence when in fact it was the other way round. It surely would have been very relevant to the discussion as to why these communities still distrust the BBC after so many years. Also, I'd quite like to know whether it's true or not!
