SCHOOL LEAGUE TABLES
The league tables have been published in this country since early 1990s. Within the UK only England continues to circulate them, but how accurate a guide are they when choosing a school for your child? In a new study Bristol University statisticians have taken the GCSE marks of students in England and compared the ‘value added’ scores with simple GCSE averages.
Libby Purves talks to Professor Harvey Goldstein from the Centre for Multilevel Modelling at the University of Bristol, who led the study.
GRAND UNION ORCHESTRA
This year the Grand Union Orchestra is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Orchestra is a mixture of instruments, styles (everything from African drumming to haunting Turkish and Arabic strings to Western blues and jazz) and musicians (including professionals) from around the world.
With their long standing commitment to education, the celebrations include a new youth orchestra to nurture young talent. Sara Parker went to find out what a new youth member could expect.
SKILLS EVOLUTION LAUNCH
This morning the Skills Evolution Report was launched by futurologists, scientists and Ufi, the organisation responsible for learndirect. The report looks at technology’s future impact on learning and how this could affect the workplace.
