WORK-BASED QUALIFICATIONS
Three companies are to be in effect their own examination boards - McDonalds, Flybe and Network Rail are the first private companies to be able to award national qualifications – not NVQs but fully equal to GCSEs, A levels and even beyond. are being allowed to offer on-the-job courses which could form part of a qualification at the standard of GCSEs, A-levels or even degrees. The new scheme is part of a number of measures to extend vocational training, announced today by Gordon Brown, including more apprenticeships and help for the long-term, unskilled unemployed to get work.

VOLUNTEERING
In 2007 nearly half the population of England volunteered regularly. Their contribution to the economy amounted to some £48 billion. Without these volunteers, it is estimated that over a million full-time workers would be needed to replace them. A report looking into the future of Volunteering, Manifesto for Change, by the Commission on the Future of Volunteering was released today. It includes recommendations about training for volunteers and qualifications.
