CHILDREN IN CARE

There are about sixty thousand children in care at any one time in the United Kingdom and figures show that there is a high level of under-achievement in their education.  The Children's Bill currently going through Parliament will reach the statute book by Christmas and will place a new duty on local authorities to promote the educational achievement of children in their care.

Libby Purves is joined by Helen Hibbert, Head of Education Development at The Who Cares? Trust, which works to improve public care for children and young people in the UK; Marcella Phelan, Deputy Director of Children's Services at Ealing Council that has set up a drop in centre and also offers practical help and support; and Ann Western, Derbyshire County Council deputy council leader and cabinet member for social care and health who explains their new initiative aimed at foster parents to help boost educational standards.

Sara Parker talks to two young people Genna and James, who spent much of their childhood in foster families, about the effects of their complicated home lives on their schooling.

LIFEBOATS

Sara Parker travels to Poole in Dorset to visit the recently opened Lifeboat College and Survival Centre and talks to students and tutors.

HIV AIDS and EDUCATION

Libby Purves talks to Tania Boler; author of a new report: "HIV Aids and Education: Addressing the Educational Needs of Orphans and Vulnerable Children" commissioned by for Action Aid International and Save the Children
