Conservative and Labour parties have both announced their new plans for education.

The government’s five year plan for education will aim for more city academies and more foundation schools to improve standards.  The British Humanist Society remains sceptical.

Libby Purves talks to its new president, comedian Linda Smith to discuss their concern with this new proposal.

ONE POINT ENTRY TO SCHOOLS IN DERBY

From September nurseries as well as primary schools in Derby will be admitting only in the September term.  This change is part of a long term consultation in Derby’s early years’ provision which aims to give all children an equal entitlement to the Foundation Stage of education.

Not every one is happy about the change and Simon Birkett, parent and governor at the Whitecross Nursery in Derby explains why he favours the old system of admission twice a year.

To discuss the ongoing march towards one point entry to education, Libby Purves is joined by Jo White, Chair of the National Campaign for Real Nursery Education and Head of the Portman Centre.

FOUNDATION STAGE FOR 3 AND 4 YEAR OLDS

Introduced in 2000 the Foundation Stage has been hailed as an excellent idea marred by patchy application.  Libby Purves talks to Jo White and Mary Jane Drummond, co-author of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers report Inside the Foundation Stage: Recreating the Reception Year, about its successes and failures.

SUMMER BORN CHILDREN and RECEPTION CLASS

The London Borough of Barnet historically had a progressive policy of allowing summer born children to be held back out of their year group.

Now some secondary schools are refusing to admit these year kids unless they skip a year to rejoin their chronological year group.

Pat Green, father of eight year old twins Niall and Ashling shares his experience.

Councillor John Marshall, Cabinet Minister responsible for Education in Barnet talks to Libby Purves about this situation.
