TACTILE WALL AND MY HOME LIBRARY

The tactile wall at Lindon Lodge School, London, is the idea of former Children's Laureate, Anne Fine. It has noisy and tactile elements including bells, rods, shapes, pipes and rubber hoops to feel.

My Home Library is another of Anne's initiatives. It is a service which enables children to select four books from a list of 12 titles which are then sent out to them and which they can keep. The books are:

EARLY YEARS
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
Peace at Last by Jill Murphy
The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr
Eat Up Gemma! by Sarah Hayes

INFANTS
Alfie Gets in First by Shirley Hughes
The Little Red Hen by Michael Foreman
Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore
Pass the Jam, Jim by Margaret Chamberlain

JUNIORS
The Book of Riddles by Bennet Cerf
Days Like This (poems) (ed) Simon Jenkins
Mrs Goat and Her Seven Little Kids by Tony Ross
Greyfriars Bobby by Ruth Brown

BLIND EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The fourth IBSA Blind European Football Championships are currently taking place at the Velodrome in Manchester. The England team is the second favourites behind Spain. They're expected to meet in the final on Saturday afternoon. It is the first time that the championships have been held in England and also the first major blind football tournament to be held indoors. England, who finished sixth in last September's World Championships in Brazil, are among five teams taking part alongside defending champions Spain, France, Greece and Italy. Teams of five - four blind outfield players and a sighted goalkeeper - compete on a five-a-side pitch using normal footballs containing ball bearings to produce noise when kicked. Admission is free but regular highlights are broadcast on the internet. Entrance is available on match days at the Velodrome, or you can pre-book tickets by contacting the Manchester FA.

EXTEND SCHEME

BBC work placement scheme which offers appropriately qualified disabled people a great opportunity to gain a four months' paid work placement within the BBC.

The principal aim of the EXTEND programme is to enable talented people with disabilities to gain real work experience and to improve their opportunities of securing future employment within the BBC. Extend does not necessarily lead to a full time job but about a third of those who have been on the Scheme have obtained further work at the BBC.

Placements can be in London, Newcastle, Nottingham, Cardiff, Belfast or anywhere in between. This year EXTEND offers around 25 placements within both programme-making areas (which includes Assistant Broadcast Journalists, Researchers, Production Assistants, Runners and the full range of online jobs in New Media) and programme-support areas (including Finance Assistants, IT support, Marketing/Publicity Assistants and many more). These placements (pre-dominantly within the programme-making departments) will commence from November 2003 onwards.

HOW THE SCHEME WORKS

People apply for specific jobs and are short-listed and interviewed as for any other BBC job. The available positions will be advertised from September 2003 onwards. The placements are funded for 16 weeks at £240 per week by the Diversity Centre but managed through the host department.

The Diversity Centre's Access Unit will work with the participating departments to facilitate any access needs. However, there are limitations, as, given the shortness of the placements; the scheme cannot fund major alterations and expensive equipment.
