Listen to the In Touch for 10 December VISIONARY DESIGN WEBSITE AWARDS Guests: David Jillings, British Museum Compass. Sergio Zedda, Local Heritage Initiative. Carol Pollitt, National Library for the Blind's Information and Communications Technology Director, and Chair of the judges of the awards. Alan Young, one of the two visually impaired computer users involved in the process of selecting and judging. Jane Copsey attended the presentation of the first ever Visionary Design Awards in Manchester on 5 December. The National Library for the Blind gave the awards and they were sponsored by Barclays and Felix Dennis. The aim of the awards was to celebrate good practice in accessible website design. The Awards are the culmination of a campaign by the National Library for the Blind (NLB) to encourage website designers, publishers and owners to provide sites that are accessible to visually impaired people. The Internet could and should be a marvellous source of information for people who cannot read print, but too many websites are being designed in such a way that screenreaders and braille displays cannot read them, so visually impaired people are excluded from those sites. WINNERS OF AWARDS Twenty-one sites were shortlisted for awards (from nominations by the general public), and six winners were announced on the night.
