Sheila, Dillon with Matt Smith of Entremettier ( centre) and Tom Beeston
Sheila Dillon, with Matt Smith of Entremettier (centre) and Tom Beeston
As New Covent Garden market looks to reinvent itself - along the lines of Rungis in Paris - Sheila Dillon hears from both sides of the Channel, just what is required for a successful capital food market with an emphasis on locally grown produce.

Over the past decade, New Covent Garden has changed. Once it was dominated by the traders selling wholesale fruit and veg, but now they are outnumbered by the catering suppliers. And with the growing demand for locally grown food, a three year project, run by ex-farmer and food campaigner, Tom Beeston, aims to persuade the whole supply chain, from growers, to buyers, to caterers, to work together to source and promote more local produce.

Sheila Dillon talks to Tom Beeston and to Helen Evans who’s Communications Manager of the Covent Garden Market Authority.

Sheila Dillon talks to Andrew Thorogood, of S. Thorogood and Sons’s - a buyer.

Matt Smith from Entremettier, a high quality catering supplier.

Sheila Dillon talks to Philip Marsh from The French Garden, a supplier of predominantly French produce.

Bill Collison who runs Bill’s Produce Store in Lewes in East Sussex, who talks about the difference in presentation between produce supplied by Covent Garden, and Rungis.

Sheila Dillon is joined by Charles Davous, who is the brand ambassador from Rungis Market in London.

In Rungis, Paris correspondent Catherine Guilyardi, meets Rungis Market’s communications manager, Phillipe Stisi.
