The Food Programme discusses potatoes - their origins, their arrival in Britain, the different varieties and also visits an eccentric potato festival in Slovenia.
Sheila Dillon is joined in the studio by Dr Sandra Knapp, research botanist at the Natural History Museum and on the line from Dundee, Alan Romans, author of The Potato Book and consultant to seed companies and supermarkets.
Reporter Dilly Barlow visits Bela Krajina in Slovenia to attend the 6th annual festival of The Association for the Recognition of Sauté Potatoes with Onions as a Main Dish.
She meets Janez Fajfar, founder member of the organisation and it’s newly appointed Foreign Minister, and talks to Slovenian TV star, Drago Bulc about his involvement and enthusiasm for the society, which he says is an anti-globalization movement in opposition to fast food.
She samples some of the recipes being cooked at the 36 different stalls, including one from Iceland which includes gravadlax.
