How much sugar should we eat?

Journalist James Crawford, a self-confessed sugar addict wanted to see if he could cut out all the sugar in his diet. He kept an audio diary of his two-week experiment.

Dietitian Azmina Govindji explained the health target in Britain for sugar consumption – to eat no more than 10% energy from added sugars, which is equivalent to about 12 tsp sugar (1 tsp = 5g). She illustrated how easy it would be to exceed this amount by eating sweets, chocolates and fizzy drinks.

Tim Richardson explained the history of the British sweet tooth, and the importance of sweets as treats.

Sheila Dillon explored the issues of controversy surrounding the sugar targets with Marion Nestle, Professor in Nutrition at New York University, Jack Winkler, sugar campaigner and Penny Hawley of the Biscuit, Cake, Chocolate and Confectionery Association.

Kevin Watkins explained Oxfam’s concerns about the EU sugar regime as detailed in the recent report: ‘Dumping on the world: how EU sugar policies hurt poor countries

Sheila was joined in the studio by East Anglian sugar beet farmer Oliver Walston to discuss sugar subsidies and to compare sugar beet and sugar cane.
