Mukti Jain Campion visits 5 pioneering projects that are bringing the internet to rural communities on the Indian subcontinent.

Wise Women of the Web
Women of Embalam run the village information centre from a room in the Hindu temple.

Programme Three: Wise Women of the Web
A women's self-help group in Embalam village runs a computerised information centre from the local Hindu temple, bringing details of government job opportunities, farm prices etc to the local community. They also train other women and children in using computers. It has transformed their status in the village - the very intention of the project's founder MS Swaminathan (world-famous father of India's Green Revolution) and connected them to the world, eg relaying information about local herbal medicines.

Information on this project from the M S Swaminathan foundation
