Mukti Jain Campion visits 5 pioneering projects that are bringing the internet to rural communities on the Indian subcontinent.
Fisherman in the village of Veerampattinam checks the computer printout of
the day's predicted wave height reports before deciding whether it's safe to
go fishing. |
Programme Two: Making Waves
A fishing community near Pondicherry uses the internet to get daily local wave height reports and weather forecasts. These tell the fishermen whether it's safe to go out fishing and where the largest shoals are located. Since it helped to save many lives by predicting a cyclone in 1999 the fisherman are convinced of its value. Comparative fish market prices are also published each day to help their wives get the best price for their fish.
