Jonathan Dimbleby explores the impact of famine on modern Ethiopia in two programmes, the first looks back to the 1973 famine, the second at events since then.

Dessie, Wollo, Ethiopia Dessie is the poorest town in Ethiopia, which means it's as poor as any town on earth. It was the epicentre of the 1973 famine, a famine which Jonathan Dimbleby reported for the ITV This Week programme. For Jonathan, a regular visitor, it is also a source of hope and inspiration.

Eroded land in the Highlands of Ethiopia

Capital of the province of Wollo, Dessie sits 6000 feet up in the Ethiopian Highlands an area which has suffered serious erosion.

Jonathan with Demissie Fantaye

Demissie Fantaye was regional scout commissioner during the 1973 famine. He organised his scouts into work parties to fetch and carry water, cook food and bury the dead. Demissie's memories of the time are shot through with anger over the refusal of the authorities to acknowledge the crisis.
