THE LONELY PLANET STORY
There was a time when if lost or in trouble abroad one could expect the local ambassador to come to the rescue; but those days are sadly long gone, they have been replaced by an essential piece of kit – the travel guide.

Sandi Toksvig is joined by Tony Wheeler Co founder of Lonely Planet travel guides and Jennifer Cox, travel journalist and writer, to discuss how the modern guidebook has changed the way we travel. Find out which British city was described as a symphony in grey and pick up some essential travel tips – including how to avoid the classic bird droppings scam.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GLADYS AYLWARD
Hazel Staten
’s life threatening illness inspired her to set off on an exceptional journey. She travelled from London across Europe to Yangcheng, a remote city in Shanxi Province, following in the footsteps of the early 20th century missionary Gladys Aylward, whose life story was made into the film Inn of the Sixth Happiness.

This week’s guests:

Tony Wheeler
is co-founder of the Lonely Planet travel guides.  He did his first trip with his wife Maureen, travelling across Europe, then in 1972 set off for a year long trip “to get the travel bug out their system”.  They followed the hippy trail from England through Asia to Australia and saw the need for a new kind of travel guide.

For Tony some places find a way into your heart and you never forget them. He recalls his adventures in his new book entitled The Lonely Planet Story: Once While Travelling

Jennifer Cox is a travel journalist and writer.  She joined Lonely Planet in the early nineties having spent six years living in Australia.  Jennifer has travelled extensively and is happiest when she is putting her life in a bag and setting off.  She loves the journey and stations are among her favourite places including Penn station in New York and Prague.

Hazel Staten recently set off from Liverpool Street Station in London and travelled by rail across Europe to Beijing; where she then flew to Yangcheng, a remote city in Shanxi Province.

Hazel wanted to retrace the steps of the incredible English parlourmaid Gladys Aylward who became a missionary in China in the nineteen thirties.  Her story was immortalised in the 1960's Hollywood movie called The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman.  Gladys left Yangcheng, where she was based, travelling across the mountains to lead 100 orphans to safety through the war torn countryside.

Hazel’s wish was to send a message of hope to anybody undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia.
