DERVLA MURPHY
Dervla Murphy
has been writing travel books since the early sixties.  The first one entitled Full Tilt was an account of a seven month solo bicycle journey from her native Ireland to India. Dervla’s lastest book is called Silverland; in it she relates her travels from Moscow to the Russian uttermost east.  Her journey was done mostly at twenty miles an hour on the BAM train, the slow local service that chugs across the world’s largest country.  Dervla looks back over her travelling life so far.

JULIUS STRAUSS
Former war reporter Julius Strauss spent years in war zones like Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Chechnya.  Nowadays, after a decade or more reporting on conflicts, Julius can be found in the remote wilds of British Columbia where he has settled and where the main danger is from bears rather than bombs.

This week’s guests:

Dervla Murphy
is one of the best known travel writers in English.  Her extraordinary life in travel since she first cycled to India from her home in Ireland in the 1960s has taken her to most parts of the world, often lands in the process of change and usually by herself, self propelled and self supporting.

Now in her seventies, Dervla has recently returned from Cuba where she has again been cycling solo through a country at a crossroads.  She reflects on how travelling has changed in the last fifty years and what conclusions she has come to about the people and cultures she has encountered on the way.

Julius Strauss is a British print journalist who spent several years working as a foreign correspondent in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and other war zones.  Julius now runs an eco lodge in Canada with his wife Kristin.  Visitors can walk in the only inland temperate rainforest, raft and
fish but the main attraction is bear and wild life watching.
