Richard Macduff left Dirk Gently at the end of the last series to go back to developing software for WayForward Technologies. But his boss Gordon Way has died (again), and Richard's ex-girlfriend Susan - Gordon's sister - has sold the entire company to a shadowy Californian hi-tech corporation in Silicon Valley called Sirius Cybernetics.

Richard bumps into his friend Kate Schechter at Heathrow Airport as he is escorted to the plane taking him to his new career, but his involvement with Dirk Gently is not over yet. Richard becomes involved with the development of new technology that will have far-reaching effects both for Dirk and for all mankind.
