Detective Sergeant Gilks is back, newly promoted, transferred to the Metroplitan Police, and as grumpy as ever. Dirk Gently's nemesis on the force is suspicious as to how the body of a man in a locked basement can be found ten feet from his head with apparently no sign of an intruder having gained access, and is determined that the crime being investigated is suicide. Dirk Gently, however, is not so sure. But can he convince Gilks that dark deeds are afoot?
