Alison Hindell, Producer/Director of Under Milk Wood
I'd just like to say thank you for all the wonderfully appreciative comments that have come flooding in all week. I am overwhelmed by your reactions and will make sure they are conveyed to BBC Worldwide,in the hope that they can be persuaded to publish this new version. It was a privilege to be able to work on this definitive radio play. To answer one point: we used the 1963 recording rather than the 1954 one because in the former, Burton performs both First and Second Voice (so we had more flexibility) and the recording is in better condition and is less affected by extraneous noise. I also found its more constrained delivery sat more easily with the new performances. Many thanks once again.

Sorry. Disappointing. Apart from Burton and Sian Thomas's 2nd Voice, little sense of the rhythms of Thomas's prose, either comic or lyric, particularly in the group scenes. At times flat, at other times cloyingly sentimental. John Humphries' contribution was a pointless, embarrassing gimmick that failed entirely. I love UMW but not enough to praise a lacklustre production such as this. Off to the Reformatory!

Gill Walters
Brilliant and the casting of Sian Philips as a female 2nd voice worked particularly well. Also appreciated the John Humphrys cameo and the music. If tapes or CDs are not available for Xmas the BBC have missed a huge marketing opportunity.

Garry Collins
I reiterate what has been said by a few others above, the 1954 original version is, in my opinion, a vastly better performance by the actors, especially Richard Burton. I also found the inclusion of John Humphrys voice incongruous, his is most definitely a voice for today or "Today". I shall continue to treasure my tape of the original performance.

Ed Docker
What a brilliant use of Burtons` voice. What a spellbinding play. I dont normaly have time for the `Arty Works` but was absolutly enthralled by this one. MORE PLEASE on Saturday. Hope you are encouraged to put it on CD.

Paul Buisseret
Technically and dramatically very good. Choice of music excellent. A commercial release would sell like hot cakes. A repeat on a weekday evening would get a bigger audience since, with the inexorably progressive 'dumbing -down' policy infecting Radio 4 - and Radio 3 - there is very little on radio for grown-ups between the hours of 7.30 pm and 10.00. A re-broadcast of a tidied-up original would make for a fascinating comparison.

Billy Swansea
A splendid effort and as you chose not to use Burton as second voice the choice of Sian Phillips was a sound one, especially as she was such a delight in the Dylan play broadcast the week before. I still prefer Burton reading second voice however as he is the daddy when it comes to Under Milk Wood. With regard also to an earlier comment made about using a living actor such as Anthony Hopkins there is a musical version of Under Milk Wood with Hopkins as First Voice and melliflous as he is he rapidly adopts his Burton impression and from midway through you have to remind yourself you're not listening to Burton.

gwyn higginson
Wonderful new version that re evoked past memories of the last time I listened to the original. Beautifully recorded you can let it drift by you in a relaxed state as if you are there and an observer or listen alert to every detail. Well done. CD please.

john mewett
I was not aware that the programme woulld be broadcast in 5.1 until after the event. I would almost certainly buy a DVD copy of the programme if it were to be available ,so how about it,for Christmas ?

P.M. Barry
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! I sat transfixed with rapt attention. Would love to hear it rebroadcast and would definately buy it if published. Thanks very much.

Charley Johnston
This is superb. My tape of the 1964 version is getting very tired from over use. This has brought it into today's technology, and is a an instant success, despite not being the familiar friend that the tape is. Please put it on DVD as well as CD - then I can listen to it in the 5.1 as well as in the car. If you cannot do both, do the DVD only, because increasingly peoples best audio reproduction is on the DVD rather than separate audio outfits.

Sandy Thomas
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful - I really want to get a CD of this as this would be the best Christmas present in the world for a very good friend of mine. It seems we all want to know when we can get a recording.

Debra Bartlett
Will a CD be available in Australia? Have never been able to get the original version - hope this one will become available soon.

davedellow
Great and as my tape copy from years back was fading fast i too wish the BBC will read these coments and bring out the cd soon , well done every one that worked on it , and those like i that may know some one in the cast of bugger all towns all over this rainy land .

Richard & Mollie Myers - Canada
Magical!

Kate Brown
Wonderful, wonderful, especially to hear Richard Burton's lovely voice again. Another plea for a CD soon. Also, could we hear Albert's Bridge again?

Jim Parker
A magical production, evocative and inspiring. Please reproduce it on CD ASAP.

paul c davis, manchester
as a child i remember seeing the film on the telivision, it scared the life out of me, just listened to it tonight on the net,"fantastic, brilliant, magic".

Frank Barlow
Just listened to it again. Radio highlight of the year. Credit and thanks to all involved in the production. This deserves to be brought to a wider audience. You should have advertised this on TV, instead of continually plugging BBC4.

Peter Lee
How could one not adore the whisky and cigarette voice of Richard Burton. As for the rest, passable. However, I am unlikely to change my cassette of the original production for a reproduction of the latest one.

Mike Wise
I was sceptical whether any new production, even keeping in Richard Burton, could ever be as good as the original. I am glad to say that this is a superb production, given extra depth by the use of 5.1. Truly, better pictures than television.

alex devare
i have heard the original many times, but i have to say this version is a masterpiece. I just hope it will be available on CD

Derek Hough
Pure Magic! Thank you BBC. It brought tears to my eyes.

Bob Blackman
Please advise when this will be available on CD or, failing that, when it is to be repeated. I think this is a magical evocative production that I would listen to time and time again. Thank you.

Phil Brazil
Utterly refreshing. The mix of Burton and new cast is fabulous.

David Crosbie
Pretty good, but the original was so much better. The intonation was so much duller this time. The original may have used a caricature of South Welsh speech. If so, what a wonderful melodious caricature! And how depressingly PC to reduce the bravura! And what happened to that marvellous trick of cross-fading Polly Garter's son and 'A Lover an His Lass'? Did the engineers think it spoilt their precious sound?

Gareth Wonfor
My First experience of 'Under Milk Wood'. Beautiful, Ugly and Utterly enthralling!. I am going to go and hunt down the original recording now.

Jennifer Smith
A brilliant piece of poetry. Nothing could ever replace the voice of Richard Burton. As a 'South Walian' now living in Devon, I thoroughly enjoyed a good wallow! I too would like it on CD. Thankyou, BBC.

Peter Jennings
I listen often to an MP3 made from a tape recording of a BBC World Service rebroadcast of the original made many years ago. It is a favourite companion on long flights and I bask in the accents and mood of that broadcast despite the occasional noises and hisses of short wave. You are to be congratulated for the modern version you have created, but perhaps I have listened to the original too many times to be objective. I find this version sterile, wooden, and lacking the incisiveness of the original. I missed the expurgated passages and would have gladly done without the music. Was there a time constraint? [A long silence] in the script was short indeed! Thank you for making it available on the web site so we can listen again and again, but a digitally remastered copy of the original would make me really happy. Why not put both on a CD?

SUZANNE
WONDERFUL, I REALLY ENJOYED IT THANK YOU BBC YOU KEEP ME IN TOUCH WITH HOME SUZANNE TURNER KENTUCKY U.S.A.

Paul Ruddock
Out of this world!! When will it be available in the shops?

Janet Crawford
I had no real intention of listening to the play but was soon captivated by the marvellous poetry and the portrayal of a day in village life. I would love to hear it again and to get a written copy of the work.

Martin Jones
I have just listened to the 5.1 Surround Sound version over ADSL and it exploited the extra speakers superbly. Atmospheric, moving and comic in turn - well done BBC!

Richard Elen
A wonderful new production... surround sound was an excellent addition. I think I still prefer the original, but... I would CERTAINLY buy this on DVD-Audio. A perfect release! I am sure that there would be plenty of still image possibilities and other extras for the disc too, such as the script...

BRIAN JOHNSTON
THIS WAS AN MISSED OPORTUNITY THE NARRATOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LIVING ACTOR(ANTHONY HOPKINS)THIS HOWEVER IS A GOOD PRODUCTION BUT NOT AS GOOD AS YOUR FIRST.I HAVE AN LP RECORDING OF THE FIRST PERFORMANCE IN THE U.S.A WITH THOMAS AS NARRATOR AND THEATRE STAFF ROPED IN TO PERFORM THE PARTS.(RESTING ACTORS) APPARANTLY SOMEONE PUT AN ORDINARY TAPE RECORDER MIKE ON THE STAGE TO RECORD IT.ARE YOU AWARE OF THIS RECORDING? HAVE YOU GOT MICHAEL MCLIAMMOR'S BALLAD OF READING GAOL STILL (FROM EARLY 60'S) NOW THAT IS GREAT. COULD YOU BROADCAST IT AGAIN.

Bridget Long
Thank you so very, very much. Worth my whole licence fee. Yes, can it please be on CD before Christmas? Burton + Sian Phillips + those sounds + new take on the old words. It was so absorbing. Thank you.

Vikki Nuttall
Thank you BBC! Best thing I have heard in years! PLEASE PLEASE bring it out on CD before Christmas!

Howard Jones
This was an excellent reproduction of the Dylan Thomas classic. I have not heard or seen 'Under Milk Wood' performed since the 1960s but like an old wine, it seems to have improved with age. It took me back to my youth in South Wales. Including John Humphries was a very nice touch. The BBC team did an excellent job marrying the new voices with the old. Like other correspondents I would like a CD/DVD version of this if it becomes available.

Gill Bullen
Without the benefit of 5.1, it wasn't easy at first to see the point of a new production. There is still just nothing to beat Richard Burton as First Voice: hats off to whoever decided to retain his original contribution! Unlike some listeners, I loved John Humphrys' cameo role as the voice of the guidebook - a neat bit of casting, I thought. Overall, beautifully done; I've got a CD of the original, but if this production becomes available too, I might well buy it.

Peter Marcus
Can't match these other comments. Suffice it to say, I too would love the CD of this play. Please release it!

Nicholas Grigsby
Truly magnificent, the BBC team are to be congratulated on this quite brilliant revision of this extraordinary work. I cannot recall any recent piece of radio work which in such a charming and sensitive way captures atmosphere and imagination. Of course Burton so brilliantly set this piece all those years ago, immortalising it, but what a sensitive and evocative recreation you have given us here. Again, many congratulations to all involved in this stunning piece of radio at its very best. The hairs on the back of the neck stood up many a time throughout!

Freda Beech
Spellbinding. I listened whilst travelling between Llandrindod Wells and Welshpool on a sunny Autumn afternoon. Not sure how many red lights I went through!! Please, please issue the CD soon.

Dave Bridges
5.1 was a superb vehicle for this classic - Excellent !!

Chris Vout
It brightened up the cleaning on a very dull Saturday. I thought it was much better than the old version. I would very much like to have a copy on tape, CD or DVD.

rosie p
tried to record but missed the bloody middle bit. Wonderful. echo request for CD asap please

Derek Batchelor
Excellent, but NOT as atmospheric as the original [which I still have on vinyl!!] Still, a very worthy effort and a treat to hear.

Mike Ellwood
Fabulous. Thank you very much for the opportunity to hear Richard Burton again. I wasn't sure beforehand about the idea of combining his original recording with a new cast, but I am delighted to say that it worked beautifully. I hope that DT and RB are drinking a heavenly pint or two to celebrate this! :-)

Peter Hill
Only one word need Stunning

Caroline Froude
It was wonderful, please release it on CD before Christmas as I want to add it to my wish list!

david.bateson
Excellent! Alas my tape deck let me down so, along with many of those who have commented before me, can I plead for a CD version in time for Christmas?

mza
Mad as a fish, but excellently handled. special cheesecake to the techies who made it happen.

Dave Preston
Caught only a snatch but enough to persuade me to buy the CD of the earlier recorded version featuring RB. Magical.

Bill Phillips
Generally good - but some acting was a little wooden, others were brilliant. Some phrasing missed the mark - I mariied into a welsh family so I heard the emotion put int "and make sure he wipes his feet" and " what will the neighbours say...". Sadly the emotional force was missing !! Having said that - it was very enjoyable - thanks!!

Martin Lam
Simply brilliant. When can we buy a c d ?

Nick Robinson
Brilliant! Almost as good as the Radio 4 "Hi-Fi Theatre" production about 20+ years ago. I'd listen to this one again if it were to be made available on CD. Congratulations on an excellent effort.

Mat Staniforth
Please make this available on CD. Or, even better, DVD Audio; making full use of the 5.1 mix! Will this be repeated on Radio 7 sometime? Over Christmas?!

jim harris
wonderful. normally i dont like poetry/prose but this was exceptional , in was it 5i? ,beautiful!!1

Kirsty Tattersall
I only knew it's reputation - to my shame I hadn't made it's acquaintance before. What have I been missing - everything about it bowled me over. Why not re-issue to 2 earlier versions and this one as a CD set - please - if that's not possible get this version out a.s.a.p. A big thank you to all involved.

ANNETTE Davies
Brilliant, where can I buy a copy? annette.

Elissa Palser
The sound effects were fine, but some of the acting was abysmal! It sounded like they were just reading it off the page! If some people thought it sounded magical that was the play and not the production, they obviously haven't listened to the original recently. Nothing compares to that very original version, not the one you get if you buy the tape, but the 1953/4 version. I wish that was out on CD. I listen to my recording from Radio 3 most nights and it is bound to wear out soon.

Letty Macmillan
Quite superb. I was taken away to another world. Please please make it available to purchase asap - Christmas would be great - it would solve so many present problems.

Anthony Blenkinsopp
I heard the first broadcast when I was 7 years old. I have heard and seen and have recordings of other productions including the premiere in New York. This production was as magical and atmospheric to me as the first time I heard the play. I feel sorry for Chris. Please make it available on CD as I like to listen several times each year. This could be my recording of choice.

Anna Stribley
Absolutely fabulous! When can we buy a copy?

John G. Sutton
I was sitting in my car beside the fishingboat bobbing sea at the harbour in Whitby, North Yorkshire listening to this new adaptation. The combination of Dylan's words, Burton's voice and the brilliant production made this a truly magical experience. Simply wonderful.

Rab Spence
I thought this was wonderful. I listened to it on my own and would dearly love to share it with friends. I must agree with the majority of your correspondents - t would be great if it would be possible to purchase it on CD - in time for Christmas!

Diana
I recorded it and walked along the beach in Haifa. It was amazing. Thank you.

Beth Morgan
Will it be repeated? Will it be available on CD?

Sue
It was magical. PLEASE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE ON CD/CASSETTE ASAP !!!!

Alan Fox
The original version was perfect in every way, and whilst this was a very good production, it cannot compare with the original. I found some of the sound effects distracting. Suggest you broadcast the original to allow people to make their own comparison.

Alice Element
Wonderful recording,I was enchanted,& delighted to hear John Humphrys among the excellent cast. I can only say a CD please please....in time for Christmas ? Thank you

Robin Ottaway
Real treat CD at once please

Howard King
Can't be praised more highly - terrific! As Landlord of the Uplands Tavern in Swansea, we put on the Stan Tracey jazz suite of "Under Milk Wood" as part of the 50th. anniversary events taking place here in Swansea just last week, & the 5.1 BBc production was the "icing on the cake"!

Bill Ferguson
Wonderful. Although I have always enjoyed the use of words in this piece, with time, I had forgotten just how good it was, especially when played by a marvellous cast. Thanks

Diana Evans
What a wonderful way to tackle the ironing on a Saturday afternoon. Recently saw the stage version at New Theatre, Cardiff, which was magical, but hearing Richard Burton as first voice you realise that it was just made for his wonderful Welsh voice. Please let it be released on CD soon.

Mike Buckingham and grandson Charlie
Its just gotta gotta be on CD. So said me and Charlie my grandson. Wonderful to listen to on a rainy day stuck in a traffic jam on a rainy Brighton seafront, with the wipers not working. The surf looked magical!!!

MARK RICHARDSON
A truly beautifull tale! You really are taken there,by the hand of Richard Burton!;As an overview;gliding over the houses and hills, silently watching. Please release this wonderfull production;a true pleasure to hear Burton, once more!

Stephen Hill
Unfortunately I unavoidably missed the first half but the second was marvellous and the clarity of the words exceptional. I have the cassette of the original BBC version and a CD of the 1963 production (the latter is rather disappointing, but I cannot put a finger on exactly why!) and I think this is by far the best yet. Anyway, please, please get this latest version onto CD without delay! Many thanks to all the "voices" and the sound engineers for a superb performance (the merging of old and new appeared seamless) - I am most grateful.

Malcolm Simpson
I also would like to purchase a cd of the production. Please let me know of availability. Enjoyed the production immensely.

Jimmy Crack
Boring. No magic. Flat.

marybell barnes
Wonderfully done! We SO enjoyed it. Please add my name to the list of people who would like a CD if and when it is released.

Alan Vance
Absolutely brilliant!! I know others have already said this but we don't want you in any doubt: We NEED this released on CD!

Nicholas Hawkins
Absoulutly superb.Pure magic.Richard Burtons reading of the first voice sent me back to my school days when i first heard Under Milkwood being read to us in the dark.I do hope that you will make this recent reworking available on CD and sooner rather than later!

Nikki Steele
Thank you - I enjoyed this broadcast SO much. I am ranting about it to all my friends. It was truly magical. Please allow us to buy it on CD - everyone should have a copy!

Lesley Cooke
At the risk of being repetative - absolutely brilliant and spellbinding and when can I buy a copy? After all the above requests it would be shameful of the BBC not to release it.

Nicky Rogers
It was completely fabulous, I can't wait to hear it again. It was a wonderful treat on a lazy Saturday afternoon, will it be out on CD soon?

Rory Merry
Hello, is there any way of getting hold of a copy of the Under Milk Wood production? Many thanks, Rory Merry

Cheeve O'Brion
Velvet runs through my day now listening to this beyond us,thanks to all for taking me out for the day,

Sylvia Chambers
I did enjoy it but not more than the original, and the John Humphrys bit really jarred - it took a while to get back into the mood after it. Will the original be repeated some time?

Fiona McMurtrie
I would just like to say how much I enjoyed this production. The actors were all superb and made the characters come to life. The icing on the cake had to be the part played by the late Richard Burton - what a voice!! Many thanks - it made my weekend.

Avril Caryer
I had to miss this production of Dylan's masterpiece in order to go and see the other Dylan (Bob),so PLEASE bring it out on CD soon!

Janet Alton
Absolutely hilarious. The all-Welsh cast really made it something special. When can I buy it?!!!

Dave Goldwater
A wonderful production in absolutely every respect.

Maeve ONeill
I just loved this new recording. I have an old LP recording of it and love it but the sound here was magnificent. Any chance of it being released for purchase soon? Thank you again.

Peter Morris
This is a laugh-out-loud-funny, cry-your-eyes-out-sad, tickle-your-neck-hairs-moving and shake-your-head-unbelieveable production. Thank you.

Peter Morris
This is a laugh-out-loud-funny, cry-your-eyes-out-sad, tickle-your-neck-hairs-moving and shake-your-head-unbelieveable production. Thank you.

June Johnson
I didn't think the original recording could be improved upon.....The new production is absolutely brilliant!! I was 'glued' to the radio!! Please release a C.D. immediately!!!

morgaine
breathtaking.

Steve Wright
What a wonderful production. I was driving and had to stop to listen. It was probably the longest anyone had parked in the supermarket car park! Please please can it be made available on CD - it would certainly be at the top of my Christmas list.

Stuart Peacock
What are the chances of making the 5.1 version downloadable rather than just streamed only? I can't get broadband where I live and so can't listen to the 5.1 version (In fact the regular version is unlistenable as well as it stops every few seconds to buffer more data). However, I would be happy to leave the PC downloading for a few hours and play the 5.1 version offline.

Kelvin Rees
Brilliant! Wonderfully atmospheric soundtrack. I have to add myself to the growing number of people wanting a CD.

Peter J Davies - Brussels
Please can we have the DVD of this production. My family is from Johnstown ans we grew up under the shadow of Dylan. This was an exceptionally wonderful celebration of Dylan's use of the language and of Richard Burtons immense talent of that period. A magical production. Can we have the CD Please

Dennis Dodds
Thank Heaven for the internet. Having missed the first hour I heard it all again via the Radio 4 web-site. Simply wonderful, especially Burton, and I shall listen to it again before it sadly leaves the web-site next Friday. You must make it available on CD ( though I will be recording it just in case you don't!). Radio at its absolute best.

John Coatsworth
I was in a car park in Catford with 30 mins to kill. I put the seat back, lay down, closed my eyes and was enveloped by the magic of the words. Brilliant.

Barry Robertson
Congratulations on another fine production of Under Milk Wood. It was inspired casting to include Richard Burton again as the First Voice and also interesting to hear a female (Sian Phillips) as the Second Voice. My late uncle, the young Welsh actor, Gareth Jones, played Butcher Beynon and Mr Waldo in the original stage and TV productions, and November 2003 marks the 45th anniversary of his death at the age of 35 during a live TV broadcast of an Armchair Theatre play called Underground.

Helen Thompson
It was fantastic - it made my toes curl lets hope there is a CD.

Chris Millward
I heard the original but missed the latest recording. Would like to know if it is available on CD?

Mike Sheppard
I only heard the latter half of the programme, which I enjoyed. Very disapointed not to find it on your 'listen again list'.

Douglas Hague
The best radio programme for years. Heard a critic before the broadcast say he wished Richard Burton had been replaced. What an idea! Who else could have matched such tone and delivery? When can we buy the CD/Tape?

M.Saint
What can I add to the above? Please, Please, when can we buy a copy???

Susan Blunt
Caught by accident whilst in the car - just the thing for a really inspired Christmas present - CD to be available from BBC?

Bernard and Denise Keeffe
Much as we enjoyed the production, my wife and I were surprised and disappointed that the name of Daniel Jones as composer of the songs was not mentioned in the credits. Since, as a boyhood friend of Thomas, his music was an integral part of the original conception, we find it insulting to his memory that this was not mentioned.

Sue Shearman
OK - so, everyone else has said what I wanted to.............just get that CD out for Christmas OK? Loved the John Humphries touch - absolutely right!

John Cowan Englishman!
Inspired! I thought the earlier versions were brilliant, and so is this one but even more so. Thank you. Please release a CD.

Alan Simm
What a wonderful production, I was driving home to Lancashire from the north east on Saturday afteroon feeling tired and fed up,I tuned in to radio 4 and this brilliant programme came on, It brightened my journey no end. Only the BBC can produce plays like this. The humour, the wit, and the vulgarity, It was marvellous. When can I buy the CD or tapes.

Michael King Macdona
I am heartened to see the chorus of requests for this production to be made commercially available. I logged on to make the same plea. I hope that the BBC takes notice. It would be a scandal if this major production of "possibly the most famous radio play of all time" was not made available to a wider audience. I missed most of the broadcast and would certainly like to be able to listen to it in full at will.

Ann
It was just magical: like everyone else asks: when can we buy it? It would be THE Christmas present. By the way, I live in Montgomery where the film of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" was filmed: we find it quite hard to be further from the sea and still be in Wales!

Tony Goudie
I recorded it whilst I was preaching in Hull Saturday afternoon. The 160 mile drive home to Norwich with the tape on went in a flash. I knew of the title but had never heard it before all through. It transports you into another age and another world with fabulous word pictures. Now if I could use such spell-binding language in my Christian messages....

Sue Crouch
I missed this and wonder whether you will be repeating it or whether it will be available on tape soon.

Ian Stevenson
Brilliant - to hear Richard Burton again brought a tingle to the spine - CD please

Michael Stevens
Absolutely superb, what must he have been on when he wrote it. I must hear this again. Can I get a tape, CD, anything?

Mary Hodgkins
Have been asked to get CD as a Christmas present. Where can I find it?

Linda Picken
Yesterday I listened to it on the radio in sterio it was very visual in my head. today I listened again from the net in 5.1 Surround Sound - being surrounded by the characters gave me a feeling of being in their heads. The positioning of the characters was very precis on the sound stage, there was some background hiss at times, but that may have been my PC set up. Roll on more 5.1 transmissions.

Ingrid Heming
Absolutely brilliant! A wonderful cast. The solemnity of Burton's voice fittingly contrasted by the lilts of the others. I was transported back to my childhood in the Ireland of the 50's. Please, please make the CD available to us here in Canada.

Luptatum
Absolutely captivating I have never heard words that have aroused in me so much emotion. It is a treasure.

Paul
Absolutely spellbinding - you simply must release it for Christmas.

Irene George
caught this by accident on my car radio. unputdownable! when/where can I get the CD, please?

Nick Thorpe
Brilliant! I happened upon it yesterday afternoon. I just hope that a CD version will be released soon. Well done! Nick

Mari Phillips
An absolutely stunning production!

Winifred Dyson
This is on behalf of my Granny who thought it was brilliant. Will we be able to buy it for her for Christmas on CD?

Nigel Rogers
Really wonderful - moving, funny, and nostalgic - not many communities you'd think of now with such a variety of character. Particularly beautiful and moving was the singing voice of Polly Garter. Burton is of course wonderful, but there's little variety in the voice; it's unvaryingly dark old testament prophet like; was Dylan Thomas himself bowled over by Burton?

Peter Spurgeon, Taverham, Norwich.
It was "Brilliant" ! When is it going to be available on CD?

Ron Cannell
It brightened an otherwise really dull Saturday afternoon, wonderful entertainment. May I add my name to the others who have requested that it be made available on CD.

Alan D. Fairweather
A good production butI agree with David Benoniel - The original had a special quality - The dressing up with extra sound effects rather detracted fro m Dylan Thomas' intention of a "play for voices". The words themselves and the voices were more poignant in the original and allowed to live without gilding the lilly. I have a recording of the original and having compared them I still prefer the original. May we hear that again sometime ?

charleswheldon
fantastic

Jenny van Tinteren
Here I am, far away in Minnesota, and it's pouring out of my laptop speakers, just as I remember it from a performance I saw years ago in Laugharne. What a brilliant broadcast. Please archive and preserve it somewhere on the website, like the treasure it is. Thank you BBC.

Jim Adams
Wonderful - need to listen over and over where can I get CD?

Andrea Jones
I was so moved by your fantastic production of Under Milk Wood. It is impossible to imagine that anyone could ever better Richard Burton's voice, what a brilliant idea to use his original recording of Ist Voice. You just know that you are going to have to make this available on CD. I was overshelmed, thank you.

Paul Cockcroft
Marvellous. More like this soon please.

A Scott
Excellent 10 out of 10. we listened to it via the web, whatever you do, don't listen to those philistines who believe the Beeb should have their web content curtailed, we upgraded to broadband precisley so we could better receive beeb progs.

Chris Barlow
Jawdropping stuff!. Burton's deep resonant tones set the scene perfectly and formed the perfect vehicle for Dylan Thomas's seemingly rambling tale of a sleepy little Welsh village. The atmosphere was claustrophobic and invigorating all in the space of 90 minutes. A triumphant piece of work by Dylan Thomas and the BBC in bringing it all together so masterfully. THIS is why radio exists! Please please inform me when it can be bought on CD as I'm desperate to obtain a copy. Yours sincerely Chris Barlow

David Sutcliffe
This programme should be made compulsory listening for all programme makers, Radio and Television. It will expose them to the excellence they might achieve and especially how to let music enhance the spoken word, not drown, it as is so often the case. Well done to all concerned.

Sue Brown
An excellent production, and a brilliant idea to include Richard Burton's recording of 'First Voice'. As enjoyable as the original broadcast - hopefully it will be released on CD !

Patricia Casey
Stunning. Please please make this recording available to purchase. Thank you so much anyway for the broadcast this afternoon of this wonderful production of this wonderful play.

Maggie DeLuca
I treasured tapes of the original for many years so was thrilled to hear this enhanced version, even listening to part of it whilst shopping for groceries, so determined was I not to miss any of it. Cannot wait for the CD, in the meantime, I replay it over and over again on my PC in surround-sound.

Mike Barnes
Best production I have heard. Keeping Richard Burton was a stroke of genius. Tape or CD available?

Jonathan Thompson
Absolutely excellent....fantastic production and it really did justice to this classic!I would also love to buy this on CD.

Arthur Grady
Hate to disagree with all the eulogies to your new production but I thought it was no improvement on the original (which I still have on tape.) In particular thought the occasional background music was diistracting.

Michael Auld
Absolutely superb! What a treat! A movingly brilliant work rendered with equal skill. Please make it available for sale in both formats. Thank you Radio 4.

Ruth Robinson
Wonderful

ANDREW ROGERS
THIS WAS THE FIRST PLAY I HAVE HEARD ON THE RADIO IT WAS JUST FANTASTIC.

Mike Gidlow
A brilliant and moving production. Amazing to me that mere words can convey such vivid descriptions and feelings and emotions. How wonderful our language is in the hands of this poet. I feel the need to sit quietly and consider all the characters .. their hopes and dreams. Congratulations to Radio 4 for this and many other quality programmes .. you are a refuge from the appalling standards of most current broadcasting.

Mrs. Ann Willers
Fantastic, what a wonderful time I have had listening to this. Please bring out a CD or audio tape before Christmas, what a great present it would be. Thank you a thousand times

jon luscombe
would you mind just repeating it. . . . every day would be just fine

Barbara Webster

Ronnie

what a wonderful production. Those lyrical South Walian acacents took me back to my chidhhod aunts and uncles in Swansea. absolutely brilliant. As everybody else has said when can it be bought on CD/DVD. As soon as possible please

J.B.Solandt
Excellent production. Please let me know when I can buy a CD of it .

Robert
This wonderful production travelled 6000 miles over the internet to my laptop speakers here in California. The miles disappeared and I found myself back home in Wales among the glorious mists, drizzle and rich characters - spellbinding!

Martyn Crosby
Thank you. This was pure magic. Can it really be nearly fifty years since I heard the first broadcast on the old steam wireless? The work has lost nothing in its ability to cast spells, and re-engineering to bring back Burton's magnificent voice in a modern production was simply splendid.

Robert Greenham
Simply wonderful! The listeners' glowing comments below reinforce one's memories of its impact. It is inconceivable that anyone might have thought not to use Richard Burton's unsurpassable narration? So many pleas for a BBC CD release. What a tribute to all concerned but, please, also issue a 5.1 surround sound DVD-audio disc (or even a DVD-video disc with no picture!).

Valerie Else
Under Milk Wood turned a drab late Autumn afternoon into a glorious summer day. The BBC at its best!

Jon and Beverley Payne
A wonderful production. Voices and music really brought out the magic of the language, fulfilling all expectations. Working in the garden, listening on headphones, I was transported to the Welsh village and we wonder if it will be issued on CD.

Michael Shergold
Fantastic! When can we buy this on CD or DVD?

Fay Jacobsen
I heard the first broadcast of Under Milk Wood in the nurses home of the London Chest Hospital, as a young newly qualified nurse. I knew then that I had witnessed the presentation of a masterpiece. Now, as a grandmother in my seventies I have enjoyed this latest production enormously. It was a master stroke to keep the magnificent voice of Richard Burton. Bessie Big Head poignant lines "He kissed her once when she wasn't looking, but didn't kss her again though she was looking all the time" succinctly expresses the tragedy of a life unloved. In fact the power of the play is that, in its characters are encapsulated all the strengths and weaknesses, bigotry and generosity, joy and tragedy of life in small communities, because of, not in spite of, the brilliant characatures. Congratulations Radio 4, my constant companion.

Andy Nickless
The original BBC/Richard Burton version has long been a favourite of mine - and I was worried I'd be disappointed by this new version - but I was spellbound. It's a truly great performance and must surely be released on CD very soon. Congratulations to the BBC on a wonderful radio play.

Paul Reeve
Nothing left to say! Absolutely stunning and beautiful! Listening to it again now in surround sound. More productions like this please.

sally whittet

Mary Fisher
Oh that I had the words to describe how I feel ... I half expected to be disappointed, having hear the original broadcast and others but it was as fresh and moving as ever. I too want it on disk.

IAN GREEN
It was an absolute delight to hear Richard Burton again in this superb production. The Dylan Thomas play has such depth that in a single listening its not possible to fully enjoy the richness of the characters. I do hope this production will be available on CD or DVD, I for one would be a ready customer. Well done BBC and thank you for loveley afternoon.

John Lenton
What a production!!! Absolutely superb. R.B's voice unmistakably brilliant -- and every one else. Forgot to record it. When will it be on again? Is a recording available for purchase?

Claire Bowden-Dan
The opening was just as magical as the original with the hairs prickling on the back of the neck. What chance of a SACD or DVD of the 5.1 version ? Otherwise I will stick to the MP3 from the DAB tuner :-)

janetlestrange
Brilliant. Is it going to be possible to buy a CDfrom the BBC in due course? Janet L'Estrange

Alec Wylie
I had switched on the radio by chance. Well that was it for the next couple of hours -- Absolutely wonderful! Burton's liquid tones at their digital best. Very well done all concerned, but please--- please please please--- when will you have it ready for sale ?

Jane Needham
A wonderful production - the best I have heard of Under Milk . I must have a copy - where can I get one please?

Holley
As a Welsh immigrant living in East Anglia, this production encaptured everything I love about the Welsh and made me feel all lovely and warm. It made the afternoon truly beautiful. Can I buy it anywhere? Please? Soon?

Judith Godsoe
It carried me away to a place where I was blissfully happy, hopeful, and full of quiet laughter. It's a long time since I've been there. It's a very long time since I've enjoyed myself so much. Thank you. Please make this edition of Under Mikwood available for sale.

June Green
Sheer magic.Shows how radio can score over TV by utilising the listener's imagination. A wonderful production and sincere thanks to all involved.

Chris
Listening to the Surround Sound audio on demand version now, admittedly only on 3 speakers, but it sounds fabulous. Incredibly clear, and remarkably stable - not even a hint of a buffer. Thank you.

randmshaw
Had to work today so couldn't listen - PLEASE put out on CD. M Shaw

Helen Butler

Eric & Gill Lewtas
We really enjoyed this new production of "Under Milk Wood". Please produce it on CD!

Ruth Booth
It is Dylan Thomas's unforgettable poetry which stays with me, particular in the narration by Burton. Thank you BBC for keeping his voice in this production. I was struck by the timelessness and universality of the play. In fifty years it has not become outdated.

Tony Paling
Wonderful, wonderful, maybe even magnificent. The best radio entertainment of the year. Repeat performance and rush to CD as soon as possible...please.

Susan O'Brien
What a magical programme. I was most impressed by how modern Richard Burton's voice sounded, and how well it fitted in with the new cast. The eerie music was really special, any chance of the production being released to buy in some format?

CHRIS WARNER
MILK WOOD IN ALL ITS VERSIONS SPELL BINDS ME, IT ALWAYS HAS SINCE I FIRST SAW AND HEARD IT ON RADIO. WORDS WORDS BEAUTIFULL ,MOVING WORDS MAGNIFICENTLY PUT. I WILL GO IN SEARCH OF THIS NEW VERSION FIRST THING MONDAY. THANK YOU BBC

David Benoliel
A very good production but I still fail to see the necessity for this "hybrid" version. I am very familiar with the original and "if it ain't broke etc....." comes to mind. There was a tendency to insert sound effects for the sake of them and the voice of Polly Garter singing, though excellent, did not have the higher pitched haunting quality of the original. Sometimes the word pictures were diminished by the music.

evelyn agnew
will this wonderful recording be available on CD? I laughed a lot and thought of the happy times I spent in the 60s in that area.

Jill Walker
I had no intention of just listening to Under Milk Wood, but I was captivated. To spend a Saturday afternoon sitting with my feet up,and eyes closed , lulled by the mellifluous voices was sheer luxury, never known before. I still have my list of things to do, but I now feel totaly relaxed and ready to tackle anything. Thank you.

David Durling
I have heard this play many times since being introduced to it by a teacher when I was an art student. Then, I had never heard anything quite like it, and it has always been something special since. This version is a fascinating mix of the original mixed in a new way. Wonderful! If there is to be a CD do let me know.

Annette Scott
A remarkable production - poignant and eerie - an unnerving window into the minds of ordinary folk by the extraordinary Dylan Thomas. Will it be available as a recording?

Claire
Fantastic - will it be available on CD?

M Picker
I was dumbfounded whe I heard this play on Radio 3 in 1954. I have always classed it as a work of genius, and this production confirms my first thoughts. Where can I obtain a copy? Please reply.

Simon Watson
Excellent production. As soon as Richard Burton's voice came on a shiver went down my spine.Hope you have sent a copy to Elizabeth Taylor.

Doug Holly
Wonderful! But I missed the first half hour - will it be repeated? As one Tonypandy boy to another - you haven't lost any of your richness Glyn! I too would like to know when the BBC is going to release this for sale.

Charlie Olsen
Wow! Thank you for the most enjoyable afternoon's housework I have had for a very long time - though not a lot got done as I have been reduced to tears several times. Any chance of making 'Pick of the week' an hour and a half long this week? Radio at it's mind boggling best!

Richard Howell
A great reading of this work. Made my afternoon.

tomturnbul
An excellent production: will it be available on CD or DVD?

James Allum
I approached this new production with some trepidation, Retaining Burton's 1st voice was a stroke of genius. No one else would ever have been able to substitute for him, but the rest of the new cast were excellent also. None of the humour and poignancy was lost. Thank you.

Nick Maltby
I have just listed to 'Under Milk Wood' I just want to say, brilliant, brilliant brilliant! Thank you so much.

Rebecca McClelland
This was the most enchanting and well produced play I have heard in years, a special treat on a saturday afternoon. When I shut my eyes I began to believe I was actually there on the cobbled welsh streets not in my cosy room in Hackney. Thank you. I would like to find out if I can buy a recording of this remastered version

mary ballingall
absolutely spell-binding production.it brought out nuances I'd never before caught.and John Humphrys' voice was unmistakeable. brilliant. taped it...so now going to listen to it all over again. thank you.

Edwina
I really loved this adaptation of 'Under Milkwood',it was wonderful!. I was supposed to be studying my French language, but I was absolutely rivetted to this play instead. Will there be any chance of buying a copy at anytime please?.

Nichola Dare
Oh WOW! I loved it. My 87 yr old Aunt is waiting for a new digital hearing aid so was unable to hear this. Will it be broadcast again? I know she would be overwhelmed too!

Donald Sumpter
One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard on radio.

Bary Ross
I remember the 1954 production and saw it on the London stage at about that time. It is still as fresh as ever it was - fantastic. Well done BBC. When will we hear it again?

Peter and Ann Marie Sheal
Excellent production. Is it going to be released on CD?

eloise hampshire
what a treat

Richard Hann
Will you making this available on the market on disk or tape,I hope so?

Mrs Susan Mayer
I really enjoyed this production; it's better than Dylan Thomas's in the original as the First Voice. But I would like to know where/how I can buy a copy. Many thanks to all concerned.

Jenny Gupta
I heard Under Milk Wood by accident when it was first broadcast and was speelbound by it. Today's broadcast is superb. Richard Burton's voice is still totally right for the work, and the accompanying voices enrich it all. I thought I recognised John Humphries voice too !!

Chris
Possibly I'm too used to the original recordings on record and the re-release on CD. The new version did not overwhelm me in the same way.

peter bunce
brilliant

Sarah Johnson
This production is absolutely exquisite. The extraordinary language of Thomas and the delivery by the actors, especially the rich resonance of Burton, has reminded me of the charm and stimulation of language. It is musical, fluid and beautiful.

Graham Harfleet
Currently listening to this superb production. Is this available to buy on CD?

John Terry
Splendid - spell binding - stunning

Barbara
Will there be the possibility of buying this new production on CD?

Robert Greenham
Perhaps I am the first to comment, particularly as I haven't heard the programme yet. My computer set-up will not allow me to hear the play in 5.1 Surround Sound, but I would like to buy a DVD or DVD-audio disc of this production (which would presumably have 5.1 sound). Your website feature unfortunately gives no indication of any plans to issue such a recording for sale. Please advise me if it will become available, and when. Thank you, Robert Greenham.

Iain Paterson
Will this recording be available to purchase via BBC Enterprises in the near future?
