Sounding Post

Friday 9 May 2008 11:00-11:30 (Radio 4 FM)

Nina Perry takes a musical journey tracing the wood used in making musical instruments back to the forest, from an Irish flute maker and a Los Angeles-based guitarist to the Mpingo Conservation Project in Tanzania.

She learns about the sonorous qualities of different species, the increasing issue of maintaining sustainable supplies and the people who connect the music to the tree.

Contributors include guitarist Laurence Juber, instrument makers Martin Doyle and Martin Bowers, forester Martin Charlton, Scott Paul of the Greenpeace Music Wood Campaign and musicians and craftsmen in South Eastern Tanzania.
