National Short Story Prize
National Short Story Prize

The winner is - The Orphan and the Mob by Julian Gough, read by Conor Lovett
Jude is a young man with a quirky take on life who leads us on a chaotic and comic journey into the heart of Ireland.

The winner was announced on the Today Programme 23rd April 2007

Nicola Stanbridge from the Today Programme reports.

The National Short Story Prize was created to reward the very best of published short story writing. Supported by BBC Radio 4 and Prospect   magazine, with administrative support from Booktrust and Scottish Booktrust.

The award is funded by NESTA (The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts). The winning author will receive £15,000, the runner up £3,500 and the other three short listed stories £500 each. While the short story continues to thrive on Radio 4, one of the world’s largest commissioners of the form, it enjoys less prestige in print. The Prize aims to redress the balance and enhance its profile across the literary world.

The shortlisted stories were broadcast as Afternoon Readings  ,16-20 April 2007.
