Catherine Bott recalls the music of Annunzio Mantovani, whose string orchestra provided the soundtrack to postwar suburban life with 20 chart entries in six years. But no other music has fallen out of fashion so quickly. Mantovani is nowadays regarded as elevator music and hardly ever played on the radio.
