The Dream Time of Jazz

Saturday 7 June 2008 20:00-21:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Marybeth Hamilton recalls an extraordinary ten-hour interview conducted in 1938 by the 23-year-old folklorist Alan Lomax with the pioneering jazz composer Jelly Roll Morton. Conducted over several sessions, the interview was recorded on wax discs and deposited at the Library of Congress. Lomax's aim was to illuminate the folk roots of jazz, and aficionados believe that he succeeded. The interview is now regarded as seminal document that shaped the writing of jazz history.
