Tom had something of an annus horribilis in 2005. His organic pork and sausage business (which he'd built up since his brother John's tragic death in 1998) collapsed when Tom's biggest customer summarily de-listed him. And to add insult to penury, Tamsin - the woman for whom Tom had chucked long-time girlfriend Kirsty Miller - de-listed him romantically as well.
But he was lucky on two counts. His hard-nosed uncle Brian Aldridge helped Tom rebuild the business, despite friction with Tom's more idealistic parents Pat and Tony. And Tom grew close to Brenda Tucker, the sister of his friend Roy. With a mobile catering business - Gourmet Grills - helping to publicise his products and an increasing ability to hold his ground with Brian, Tom proved that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
