Ruth has been a fixture at Brookfield since she arrived from Prudhoe in Northumberland in 1987, first as an agricultural student and then as David's wife. She was forced to take a progressively less hands-on role on the farm following the welcome arrival of Pip, Josh and Ben and the absolutely unwelcome arrival of breast cancer in 2000, which required punishing chemotherapy and a mastectomy.
In 2006 she started to redress the balance, insisting that David become more acquainted with the dishwasher and the kids' homework timetables. But this brought her into ever-closer contact with Brookfield herdsman Sam Batton and posed a radical threat to the Archer marriage. After travelling to Oxford to consummate their affair, Ruth had a last minute change of heart and returned to her husband and family.
