Christened Philippa after David's father and Rose after Ruth's aunt, the eldest Brookfield child is universally known as Pip. She inherited some of grandfather Phil's musical talent, learning to play the piano and singing enchanting solos at carol concerts. Well ... her family were enchanted, anyway; Phil so much so that he pushed David and Ruth into grooming Pip for Felpersham Cathedral School. Eventually the pressure of cramming and Phil's over-eager musical coaching proved too much for the poor girl. To general relief (except for Phil, obviously) Pip was directed towards the more local Borchester Green. But at first it wasn't a happy move. Pip had trouble making friends, until bubbly Izzy took Pip under her wing.
