Lucas caused quite a stir when he arrived in Ambridge. The father of Kate's baby was black. But he managed to win many villagers round with his charm and directness. Kate wasn't happy when Lucas wanted to move from Cape Town to a journalist's job with the South African Broadcasting Corporation in Johannesburg, but her love for him won through and they married in June 2001.
