As St Peter wrote, all flesh is as grass. Self-made Brummie businessman Jack Woolley dominated the Ambridge, scene for four decades. But the onset of dementia in recent years forced him to divest his enterprises, selling Grey Gables hotel, the Village Shop, The Borchester Echo newspaper and Jaxx Caff.

The erratic progression of the illness means that Jack's (third) wife Peggy never knows whether the day will bring lucidity or lacunae. And the very occasional visits of Jack's adopted daughter Hazel (from his second marriage) usually make things worse. To finish as biblically as we started, how hath the mighty fallen...
