Although easy-going socially, the head chef at Grey Gables is a stickler at work and is a big part of the hotel's continuing success. Much to the discomfiture of Sid Perks and certain other residents, this affable Northern Irelander and his partner Adam Macy occupy a cottage prominently located on the village green. Their generally stable relationship was rocked in 2006 when Ian's old friend Madeleine (Madds) asked him to father a child with her. Adam took a lot of persuading before he could support Ian - and then the mercurial Madds announced that she had met a man who she thought could be part of a more conventional family unit. All rather unfair on poor old Ian...
But happier days were on the horizon and the end of 2006 saw Adam and Ian cement their relationship with a civil partnership - an event made all the more joyful by the fact that, in the end, both their fathers decided to attend.
