After graduating in agricultural economics, Adam worked on farming development projects in Africa, returning to Ambridge in 2003. Despite Brian Aldridge's protestations, Adam's step-father found it hard to adjust to the news that Adam was gay. Although approving Adam's innovations at Home Farm, including a thriving strawberry business and an annual maize maze, Brian instinctively favours Adam's half-sister Debbie's ideas for the future of the farm. Step-father? Half-sister? Get this: when Jennifer became pregnant with Adam, she was unmarried and refused to name the father, although Adam's shock of red hair implicated local cowman Paddy Redmond. Jennifer's first husband Roger Travers-Macy later adopted Adam. In 2005 (again to Brian's unease) Adam set up home with Grey Gables chef Ian Craig.
