The Questionnaire - Felicity Jones
20 January 2005
Felicity Jones (Emma Grundy) answers questions sent in by listeners.
Do you know who is the father of the baby?
John Ellis
The father of the baby is still yet to be confirmed but I think Emma has a sneaking suspicion it may be Ed's.
What do you make of Emma's situation with Ed and Will?
Bev
I think Emma is very confused but she has made a decision to be with Will and is trying to make the best of that situation. I think eventually she'll explode with the tension and pressure of trying to be with one man whilst also loving another. She's in a very difficult situation - she has found two men that she loves for very different reasons so either choice that she makes is going to have its problems, especially as she's trapped in the situation of comparing them against each other. It would probably be best if she took some time to be alone to find out exactly what she wants.
One of the things I really enjoy about your performances on The Archers is how alike yours and Susan's voices are - both in accent and the way both characters use certain words and phrases. One really gets the impression the two of you are mother and daughter. Is this something you've worked on getting right or did it just happen?
And generally, I was wondering how much "direction" you and the other young actors on the show are given?
Brian Whitby, Switzerland
Yes I did consciously think that there would be some similarities between Susan's and Emma's voices, particularly as Susan's accent is so strong and until recently Emma has been living at home, so she would plausibly share the intonation of those around her.
The amount of direction depends on the nature of the scene - for more emotional and difficult scenes it helps to have some outside guidance. A scene tends to work best when both the director and the actor work through it, discussing motivation and lines before recording it.
Do your fellow students know that you play Emma? Do they give you a hard time about the storylines?
Annie
Yes they do and they think it's very amusing that I live a double life as Emma Grundy! It always goes down well with parents.
What do you look for in your ideal man, and to what extent do you think either of the Grundy brothers measure up?
Yorkie
Ah, my ideal man, well I'm still working that one out! I suppose if I had to choose between the Grundy brothers it would have to be Ed, the maverick is always a little more alluring, (sorry Will!).
What do you think Emma feels now Ed has come back to Ambridge with Beth? Is she jealous of Beth?
I think the arrival of Beth has definitely unsettled Emma, making it more obvious what it is she is missing out on by not being with Ed. I think Emma is very jealous of Beth, she has all the freedom and spontaneity that Emma 's life is lacking.
Would you ever do a soap drama on television? Have you got a good singing voice?
Samantha Brown
Well, I really like EastEnders - so maybe! Singing is unfortunately not my forté.
What would Ed Grundy make of Wadham College, Oxford [where Felicity is studying]? Is there any chance of an Archers storyline involving Ed and Jazzer applying to Oxford? If so, what subjects would they read?
Bankim Thanki
I think he'd probably like the drinking and the women but he and Jazzer seem like free spirits, I don't think they would like to be seen hanging around in a library. The chances of Jazzer and Ed applying to Oxford are probably small but anything's possible - they'd probably do economics or business - oh how proud Clarrie would be!
Are there any roles (from books, plays etc) that you'd still really like to play? Also, which acting situation do you prefer - television/film, radio or stage?
Simon Heath
I'd love to play Juliet while I'm still young (and uncorrupted) enough to capture that youthful essence. I'm interested in all forms of performance, yet I think it's difficult to be as equally talented in all of them as they call for such different skills. At the moment, I still feel I'm learning and want as much experience and variety as possible.
Any similarities between Weirdsister [from The Worst Witch] and Wadham College?
Stuart
Yes there are surprising similarities, especially as we have something that looks very similar to The Great Hall for dining. They use a lot of the colleges in Oxford for shooting Harry Potter, probably because of the ethereal quality of its architecture.
Where would be Emma's ideal place to live and who would she ideally like to live with?
TJ
In her wildest dreams and minus baby, she'd probably be motorcycling across Australia with Ed Grundy.
Our thanks to Felicity, and to everyone who sent in questions.
