Moyles Marches on Ambridge
5 March 2004

Chris Moyles, the self-styled "saviour of Radio 1", has declared war on The Archers in a bid to become the BBC's most listened-to show online.

Archers fans around the world have been able to listen live via their computers using the free iPlayer service since 2002. Last year the facility was extended so that they could catch up on episodes they'd missed, at a time to suit them. The Archers rapidly overtook the previous most popular programme - BBC Radio 1's two-hour DJ showcase The Essential Mix - and for the past year has held the number one slot which has become so coveted by Moyles.

The presenter is encouraging his fans to listen again to his show - via their computers - for a chance to win Chris Moyles merchandise.

Archers editor Vanessa Whitburn said: "It's flattering that Chris should view us with such envy, and it'll be interesting to see how many people are tempted by the unique attractions of a mug with his face on it. But whatever the results of the campaign, our listeners know who's really number one."
