Find out what's going on behind the scenes in Ambridge

County Flowers - Your Suggestions
9 August 2002

meadow clary

Ambridge is taking part in The County Flowers scheme is a real, national initiative for Jubilee Year, run by the wild-plant conservation charity Plantlife.

While the villagers argue, we asked for your suggestions for a flower to represent the county of Borsetshire, or any of our characters.

Meadow Clary

Martin Scholes chose the bluebell, as did Avril Lebeau, who adds "I remember it from when I was a child and the beauty of seeing it grow wild."

Vicky Griffiths reckons that Lynda would choose Blue Gentian - the rare wild flower she so famously saved a few years ago!

And Bright Shield says "Borsetshire conjures up so many different moods, meadowsweet, upright spurge, western ramping fumitory and whorled caraway (world-care-away) would all feature!!"

And here are a few suggestions for the characters:

How about Thesium Humifusum - 'bastard toad flax' for Brian!
Jessica Sutton

Hogweed: Phil
Self-heal - Lyndie
Lords and Ladies - Julia (of course!)
Ploughman's Spikenard - Joe
Hurt - Jenny. (It's Bilberry, but this is one of its names.)
Jack-by-the-hedge - well, who else?
Houndstongue - Marjorie
Globeflower - Siobhan; to do with her impending shape!
Madeleine Brierley

Brian: Smooth Stalk Meadow Grass
George: Yorkshire Fog
Joe: Old Man's Beard
Mr Pullen: Bladder Campion.
Kenton: any parasite.
Village Yokel

The Grundys’ flower is obviously the Dandelion. They keep turning up where they are least wanted and however hard one tries, it is nearly impossible to get rid of them!
