Today's April Fool - A New Signature Tune
1 April 2004

"The familiar jingle 'dum di dum di dum di dum...' is to be relegated into the vaults of history." So began the Today programme's hoax report on it's website ...

Maybe it was just a little too well telegraphed that it was the annual spoof but at a prime time on 1 April Carolyn Quinn announced that The Archers' signature tune was too undergo a face lift.

Mike Coles followed up with a special report including quotes from Archers' editor Vanessa Whitburn and cutting edge composer Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music, who had revamped the beloved Barwick Green melody.

Great fun appears to have been had by one and all. Mark Coles also took the opportunity to reflect on the changing style of storylines. And there was also a wonderfully surreal clip of Barry Cryer singing Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender to the tune of Barwick Green. The King never sang like this, thankfully...
