Radio 3 Broadcasts from Womad 2006

Andrew McGregor started off the weekend on Friday with a show that featured artists the Mahotella Queens, the irrepressible sexagenarians from South Africa; Värttinä, the blonde bombshells of Finnish folk music; and Bellowhead, one of the most exciting bands on the English traditional scene. There is also a session from the tiny BBC studio truck with Chinese flute player Guo Yue, and, from Radio 3's own stage, a live set from South African singer Vusi Mahlasela.

Lucy Duran presented a special World Routes the following day with a live performance by Etran Finatawa, the newest sound from Niger. The programme also featured Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal and salsa from Roberto Pla.

Andrew McGregor introduced late-night music on Saturday with live sets from Nigerian Afrobeat star Femi Kuti, and Indian classical singers the Misra Brothers with tabla player Trilok Gurtu. There are highlights from Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited from Zimbabwe, and flamenco singer Enrique Morente.

Andy Kershaw closed the weekend in his usual Sunday night slot, including live sets from Angelique Kidjo from Benin and Marseilles-based crooner Moussu T.

There are highlights from the performance by Congolese band Konono no.1, who were the sensation at this years Radio 3 Planet Awards, and from Moroccan singer Dame Cherifa.
