![]() World Routes in China In the first part of this four-programme epic, Silk and Bamboo , Lucy Duran visits Shanghai, where traditional silk and bamboo ensembles perform in the old tea-houses that still thrive among the skyscrapers of the modern city. In the second of her profiles, she visits a Beijing park to hear impromptu performances of greatest hits from Chinese opera; and meets Wei Hua, a rock singer whose songs show the influence of traditional Chinese music. Her visit continues with a journey to the rural village of Gaoqiao, famous for its virtuoso folk band. She also joins in the harvest celebrations at a Buddhist temple in Beijing, the first time this festival music has been allowed to be heard since the start of the Cultural Revolution. Finally she reaches the desert region of Xinjiang, part of the ancient Silk Route. Here the Uighur people, who first came under Chinese rule two thousand years ago, are reaffirming their cultural identity through their vibrant and energetic music. |
