Temple of Sound

Profile:
Temple of Sound
"We like to combine the raw with the technological," declares Neil Sparkes who is one half of Temple of Sound. Sparkes and fellow traveller Count Dubulah first combined their considerable talents as producers and songwriters in the early heyday of Transglobal Underground when they were responsible for writing and producing large chunks of the seminal 'Dream of 100 Nations' LP including the hit 'International Times'. Before that Count Dubulah was a close collaborator of Mykael Riley from Steel Pulse and a lynchpin of The Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra.

What bonds these two maverick creators is a broad obsession with all sorts of musical styles: Latin, reggae, African, Arabic, Asian, house, pop, hip-hop and a love of deep and depth-charged dub bass. Temple of Sound collaborated with Rizwan Muazzam Qawwali from Pakistan on the Real World album 'People's Colony No.1' and with Jah Wobble on the CD 'Shout At the Devil', before recently releasing their own debut 'First Edition' on the French label Wagram.

They have also remixed tracks for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Fun-da-mental and Fatback Band amongst others. Other production and writing partners have included Natasha Atlas, Peter Gabriel, The Last Poets and Linton Kwesi Johnson. In fact Temple of Sound's CV positively buzzes with exciting names and intriguing episodes of daredevil music adventurism.

Dubulah and Sparkes, who is a poet and a painter as well as a vocalist, percussionist and songwriter, revel in wide open horizons and seemingly impossible creative challenges. But however far their imaginations roam, their music is always anchored by that raw technology and dub wise groove.

Agree with Rich. After 5 minutes, and the start of headache, i decided it was a great oportunity to get some warmer clothes from the tent. A shame it figures on the audio gig on this site, when it would be so enjoyable to hear other musician again... like Khaled or Claude Chaloub...
Eli

couldn't agree more with comment by Rich. I was only in Siam tent coz of rain, and this was just 2 people with large egos and little true musical talent. Very tedious.
Gill

Temple of Sound- Beats are great. The girl has got to go.
Maja

Temple of Sound gig was extremely dissapointed to me. It has been the first vtime in ages I couldn't stand it any more. Is really someone interested in this?
Danah

Absolutelly rubbish
Thomasz

Just because it rained! Crumbs, I loved it. It was just a shame that there wasn't enough time to see and do everything. Yes, the rain was annoying and I froze to the bone but what's a festival without rain? It definitely did not dampen the amazing atmosphere at WOMAD - everyone was so friendly! Perhaps you were just in the wrong places at the wrong times.
Ali

I think the kid is rigth it take's all music to make womad if u were not happy in that tent go to a other tent. It was my first time at womad and i was not disappinting. keep it real
ozzy

What a great live set! Their engagement with the audience is so palpable that, even coming to my desk over the Internet, I want to jump up and dance
Joseph Boland

the people above I think are wrong. My suggestion is that the music is superb it is quite varied.

Perhaps not as good as their best stuff with Transglobal Underground (& the last underground album without them was terrible) but Temple still create exciting & original music in my view. And lets face it, they are competing against a dance music scene which has become as cliched & boring as most guitar pop or manufactured teenypop.
Bruce

I think that the music at this year's womad was generally very disappointing, and Temple of Sound were the worst of the lot. Arrogant, pretentious rubbish.
