Manecas Costa

Manecas Costa

Wherever the Portuguese unfurled their colonial flag, they seemed to have left behind a musical legacy of much beauty and much sadness. Artists like Cesaria Evora from Cap Verde and Bonga from Angola are illustrations that have achieved world renown.

The ex-Portuguese colony of Guinea Bissau in west Africa might already have already contributed a number of stars to the international scene if its immense musical potential had not been continually blighted by internal warfare and struggle. With the emergence of Manecas Costa however things are about to change.

As a youth in Guinea Bissau, Costa was immersed in the rich musical traditions of his native land: the choirs of the Manjak and Jola, the dancing balafons of the Balanta, Manding kora music and the enticing sensuality of gumbe, a Creole dance rhythm of enormous erotic power.

Inspired by the great Guinean guitarist José Carlos Shwarz, Costa took up the guitar at the age of nine and formed a group called 'Africa Live' with his brother Nelson. Such was the extent of Costa's local fame when he emerged from his teens that UNICEF decided to make him a Goodwill Ambassador. This gesture was also a recognition of his socially aware lyrics. In this guise he travelled and performed widely in Africa and Europe.

After another vicious bout of conflict in Guinea Bissau, Costa moved to Lisbon in 1990 where he gradually built a career as a session guitarist, producer and arranger, working with such Lusophone legends as Waldemar Bastos, Bana and Paulinho Vieira and international stars like Susheela Rahman. The title song of a self-produced solo album called 'Fundo di matu' yielded a Portuguese hit and earlier this year Costa released the hugely acclaimed 'Paraiso di Gumbe' on the BBC's Late Junction label, which was produced by presenter Lucy Duran and engineered by Jerry Boys, famous for his work on the Buena Vista Social Club album.

Prepare to witness the musical re-birth of a nation and the outing of one of West Africa's best-kept musical secrets.

I fell in love with a girl from the audience while these guys were doing a set on the village Stage for Radio 3 on Sunday night. We arranged to meet at the village stage & say hi but she left before I could make my move! Still the music was fab...roll on next year.

Manecas at Momo's was one of my highlights of 2003. After the triumph of WOMAD he played a couple of nights later to less than a 100 people, most of whom had never heard him play. They refused to let him leave the stage, singing in unison until the band returned once more. Wonderful stuff, congrats and thanks to Manecas, his band and to Lucy Duran.

something great happened yesterday in Vigo, Spain. there was a festival paid by the university in which took part some galician and portuguese musicians, some other artists from countries related with portugal where invited. Manecas did only with his guitar what the rest of the musicians couldnt, bringing the house down. unbelievable.

I saw Manecas Costa at the Jazz Cafe. I cannot put into words how much that gig meant to me, it was simply sublime. I grew up in Bissau and was so proud to be moved so profoundly by musicians and songs from that beautiful place.

Since a long time ago I became a real fan of Maneca´s wonderful and very vitaminous music . I saw him first accompanying Waldemar Bastos, and while listening to his solos work ,I could feel immediately that he was not an average guitarist, but a very very talented musician and a great person also, thanks to my lovely friends Marilu and Francisco "Congre" who also live here who introduced me to their friend Manecas. Thanks for that wonderful opportunity from BBC to make it possible to listen to this beautiful music! Saudades Su.(Gumbe-ized!!)

Hi everyone! I wanted to tell you about something that happened to me not long ago. I currently live in Bristol. At the beginning of this month I went to see Manecas Costa and his band. I have to say that the concert was absolutely fantastic. It was such a brilliant mixture of rythm and amazing melodies that only a few artists can combine. Straight after the concert I approached Manecas and the other members of the band and I had a lovely time with them. They are so sound and welcoming. They transmitted a lot of positive energy to me and that meant the world to me. I couldn't believe how humble and nice these talented guys were!. A big thank you Manecas, you rock, you rule, you have the talent. David

Every eyar I come away from WOMAD with a special memory and Manecas was the one this year. His set in the Siam was great, lovely lovely stuff but my best memory was the closing acoustic set on the Village stage that he did late on Sunday night. This was sublime - delightful melodies, light dancing music, beautiful rhythms (oh that water drum). It really doesn't come any better - a sublime end to the festival - gumbelievable.
