Jimmy Cliff

Profile:
Jimmy Cliff

It's over three decades now since the exploits of gun totin' soul survivin' baaad bwoy Ivan Martin shocked and enthralled the world in one of the most successful B-movies ever, 'The Harder They Come'. The film also managed to turn reggae music from a cult Jamaican and British sideshow into a global phenomenon and its leading man Jimmy Cliff from a local reggae ruler into a global star.

It was a huge leap for the man who was born at the bottom of the heap in St James, Jamaica, and broke into the music business aged 14 by walking into record producer Leslie Kong's ice cream parlour in Kingston and singing an a capella version of the self-penned tune 'Dearest Beverley'.

Jimmy Cliff went on to have hits with "Miss Jamaica", "Wonderful World Beautiful People", "Vietnam" and also wrote hits for others: "You Can Get It If You Really Want" by Desmond Dekker and "Let Your Yeah be Yeah" for the Pioneers. But it was his deeply soulful and heart tearing performances of "Harder They Come", "Many Rivers to Cross" and "You Can Get It If You Really Want" on the soundtrack of the film that really cemented Cliff's name in the reggae hall of fame.

Cliff joined the ranks of his friend and erstwhile collaborator Bob Marley as reggae's ambassador par excellence, and in Africa he remains almost as popular as Marley himself. Since then he has starred in films with Robin Williams and Stephen Segal and worked on film soundtracks with Elton John as well as released a long string of albums culminating in last year's "Fantastic Plastic People" produced by Dave Stewart.

Cliff is still going strong, touring, recording, and reminding the world that he possesses one of the most distinctive and soulful voices in the annals not only of reggae music but modern popular music as a whole.

I have been listening to Jimmy since 1972, and, as his fan, I accept second place to no one. But let's not fight, no. 1 fans. If we are many, that's because the divine musician deserves all of us and more. Jimmy is as great as Bob Marley and Bob Marley is as great as Jimmy, but if I had to choose one of them, I'd pick Jimmy. To me, very personally, Jimmy's is the voice of the earth, an ageless, timeless, ideology-less, unlimited, universal voice with subtleties that defy the analysis of the greatest music critic.

I just saw Jimmy play at The Galaxy Theathre in Santa Ana, California and it was great. I was able to meet him and he made my day. The club allowed us to take a camara inside the club and we took many pictures. I have been a fan of both bob and jimmy. But when I hear peaple say Jimmy is second to Bob, I disagree. I believe they are both tied at number one. Different styles but both very inspirational in their own way. The advantage is that we still have Jimmy and he still tours the world. I keeep track of where he plays and if it is whithin driving distance from me.... I'm there. God bless all of you Jimmy fans. Jimmy if you read this ... take care of yourself and beleive me your voice is not weak. you are there and your voice will never die. You will never die. Your #1 Fan Villaniexp

It was FANTASTIC!!! I'm quite ashamed to say that I didn't know who Jimmy Cliff was before I saw him at WOMAD (I did recognise some of his songs though - or what I could hear of them above the warbling of my mother!). We were dressed in plastic binbags and standing right in the middle. It was superb - I especially loved the brassy sounds and Jimmy doing the splits. Classic.

BEN EGHAREVBA
"Many Rivers To Cross" "Harder They Come" Wonderful World, Beautiful People" "You Can Get It, If You Really Want" et al Songs that inspired a generation all from the stable of one man "Jimmy Cliff". Right from the very beginning the message of the legendary Cliff was clear and was one of peace unity and advancement for humanity. Many might not understand the greatness of this man, in the late sixties and the seventies when the sweet voice of the great Cliff echoed throughout Africa, especially here in Nigeria where he was the best selling artist and cherished, his message gave hope to the oppressed and his call for hard work and resilience "you can get it if you really want" "Under the sun moon and star" was just what was needed for the emerging exploited and oppressed urban youth. While many in his genre only identified problems especially in the black man perspective, Cliff was concerned with humanity and proffer solutions to the problems facing the human race. Versatile, independent, uncompromising, sincere, just, and always positive, cliff never deviated from his conviction and it is the "Harder they come and the harder they fall of all evils leaving a wonderful world, filled with beautiful people". From ska to rock steady then reggae, Jimmy Cliff as the shepherd has consistently and guardedly led his sheep (reggae) from pasture to pasture. When he introduced a new beat in 1981/82 "Reggae Night" his critics want wild, not knowing that he had read the trend and tide of the world music, today reggae beat has been modified, and many of his contemporaries who could not adapt were left out. Roll on Jimmy.

I love you Jimmy I even want to write a book about you if you can give me the time. What I now want you to do is bring out another monster hit in the charts to conferm your place as second only to bob in the reggae field. For me you are one of the legends of all music. I would also like to see "Many Rivers To Cross" and "The Harder They Come" released as singles and become top 10 chart hits.

If the legendary Jimmy Cliff had lived 500 years back he would have be venerated as a religious fiqure. What with his message of oneness, peace, love, and understanding for all men. For a long time Cliff was regarded as the most mis-understood of the masters of the genre (reggae). His independent stances infuriated a lot of people who. From "Many Rivers To Cross" to "Fantastic Plastic People" he has over time demonstrated why he is the best loved of all the icons. Today the world has come to terms with him, and recognises the extra-ordinary nature of this man who is so concerned about the advancement of humanity in general. Jimmy Cliff remains the same after 40 years, time has not changed his message of brotherliness, peace and understanding of all men. Congratulations Jimmy on the confirmation of the long over due order of merit on you. Jb Akenuwa.

I was going to see Jimmy Cliff in Edinburgh earlier this year, but the gig was rescheduled for a Tuseday evening during term time, and I couldn't make it. Therefore, it's great to hear him live at long last, even if it isn't exactly in the flesh.
