 Profile: Jimmy Cliff

It's over three decades now since the exploits of gun totin' soul survivin' baaad bwoy Ivan Martin shocked and enthralled the world in one of the most successful B-movies ever, 'The Harder They Come'. The film also managed to turn reggae music from a cult Jamaican and British sideshow into a global phenomenon and its leading man Jimmy Cliff from a local reggae ruler into a global star.
It was a huge leap for the man who was born at the bottom of the heap in St James, Jamaica, and broke into the music business aged 14 by walking into record producer Leslie Kong's ice cream parlour in Kingston and singing an a capella version of the self-penned tune 'Dearest Beverley'.
Jimmy Cliff went on to have hits with "Miss Jamaica", "Wonderful World Beautiful People", "Vietnam" and also wrote hits for others: "You Can Get It If You Really Want" by Desmond Dekker and "Let Your Yeah be Yeah" for the Pioneers. But it was his deeply soulful and heart tearing performances of "Harder They Come", "Many Rivers to Cross" and "You Can Get It If You Really Want" on the soundtrack of the film that really cemented Cliff's name in the reggae hall of fame.
Cliff joined the ranks of his friend and erstwhile collaborator Bob Marley as reggae's ambassador par excellence, and in Africa he remains almost as popular as Marley himself. Since then he has starred in films with Robin Williams and Stephen Segal and worked on film soundtracks with Elton John as well as released a long string of albums culminating in last year's "Fantastic Plastic People" produced by Dave Stewart.
Cliff is still going strong, touring, recording, and reminding the world that he possesses one of the most distinctive and soulful voices in the annals not only of reggae music but modern popular music as a whole.
