Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh

Profile:
Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh
Comment
"Glorious! It really works!" blurted DJ Andy Kershaw when his ears first imbibed the bafflingly unclassifiable sound of the Angel Brothers & Satnam Singh.

This is a very new band from Doncaster whose members all have very lengthy and enticing pedigrees. Guitar and mandolin player Dave Angel has a music degree. His 'bro' Keith (whether they're blood related or just showbiz related like the Ramones remains unclear) is a percussionist and drummer who has contributed to award winning albums by Brit folk trail blazers Kate Rusby, Bill Jones and John Tams. Satnam Singh plays tabla, dholak and dhol, the pile-driving rhythm instruments behind bhangra and other Punjabi grooves. He was a founder member of Sahara and has also sparred with Apache Indian. Dave Formula is a Hammond organ maestro who's previous peaks include Howard Devoto and Magazine. Jim Lockey plays the bass.

The band regularly appear with poet Ian McMillan and have also on occasion invited the Iraqi diva Aida Nadeem up on stage to sing with them. A new album entitled 'From Punjab to Pit Top' saw light of day earlier this year courtesy of Wrecking Ball Records and is, according to the blurb I have here, 'playlisted all over the world'.

Now what in the name of Morecambe and Wise do you imagine that this disparate crew play while on stage? Well their music is what you might call Celtolatindubfolkyorkshirebhangralicious by all accounts. It must be that stuff they put in Yorkshire tea!

Biography by Andy Morgan, July 2003

Angel Brothers and Satnam Singh will be performing as one of Radio 3's World on your Street showcases on Sunday 27th July (4pm on the village Stage). For an interview with Keith Angel visit World on Your Street.

I heard the new album at the house of a friend who'd just returned from the Womad, and was blown away! The very next day (and quite by chance) I saw them live at the Nottingham Riverside Festival, and they were the best thing there! Havn't managed to get my own copy of the album yet, it's not in the shops....
