Les Yeux Noirs
LES YEUX NOIRS (FRANCE)

It's not just because Les Yeux Noirs are fronted by two violin-wielding brothers that the word 'fraternity' comes to mind. Eric and Olivier Slabiak have produced a band that, while scoring extremely highly on the musical front, also come with a peace-love-and-understanding vibe fitted as standard. Considered and complex yet wild and occasionally raucous, Les Yeux Noirs (The Black Eyes) certainly give notions of musical purity a good bruising.

Theirs is a sound that ignores the divisions of political maps, sneaks past border patrols and extends the hand of - it's that word again - fraternity right across Central and Eastern Europe. Equal parts gypsy and klezmer (with plenty of jazzy flourishes to boot), the band draw on music from right across the region, from Hungary down to Armenia.

It's an exhilarating, winding journey, most often conducted at a pedal-to-the-metal, breakneck speed. Fans of Taraf de Haidouks or Nigel Kennedy's work with the Polish band Kroke are well-advised to get on board. Their new favourite band has just arrived.

Saw these guys in NZ at Womad 2005 and they blew us all away. Definately the best band there. But boo! I can't find the CD either for Womad or the band themselves! Any tips guys? Even after nearly a year I'm still desperate to get my hands on a copy!
Angie, Warwickshire

I went to Womad... after seeing Les Yeux Noirs I ran to the CD tent and bought all 3 CDs and made sure I saw them twice more. Brilliant.
Dave Roberts, South Africa

Unfortunately I did not see them at Womad but had read all your comments and listened to the gig on this website before attending one of Les Yeux Noirs concerts early October in Paris. A shock ! Really amazing ! Although I had several of their CDs, I really had to see them on stage. Moreover I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Eric Slabiak (violin) and François Perchat (cello) after their concert : imagine how happy I was ! I hope they will be back very soon in the UK for their new english fans !!
Mathilde, Poitiers (France)

LES YEUX NOIRS aspires to be an BEST gypsy and klezmer band. They success as an actress is now best klezmer band. Also,LES YEUX NOIRS music is going to make a splash. and LES YEUX NOIRS band is music artistically aware.

Lost for words! (unusual!) Would have happily travelled to the distant land of Reading just to see Les Yeux Noirs. I might be 56 but YES! I was one of those "YOUNG WOMEN" (see David Mactaggart's comments above)cheering on the dulcimer player (along with my daughter!). Energy, passion and inccredible musicianship! Come back very soon please!
Sue, North Devon

The find of the festival. Absolutely brilliant. As a slightly reserved Englishman I was surprised to find myself dancing so much. Awe inspiring musical talent, humour and fun. If I were only allowed to see one gig ever for the rest of my life, it would be these guys.
Andy, Inverness

We went to WOMAD to see Robert Plant, we have come away with Les Yeux Noir being the most memorable gig! Fabulous musicians.
Gill and John, Neston

Wild and wonderful, full of fun and joyous exuberance. Left me with grin on the inside.
Nigel - Ipswich

Les Yeux Noirs were a complete sensation. The first band I watched at this years Womad. From the start they exuded charisma and musical brilliance. They mixed eastern European and "gypsy" fiddle to superb effect to create a dazzling display full of showmanship and emotion. It was even better seeing them on the Village Stage on the Sunday and special excitement was saved for the hammer dulcimer player who was something of a cult figure even in the first show being cheered on by a group of young women, brought a huge smile to his previously surly appearance. Undoubtedly one of the top three acts of the festival.
David Mactaggart Bradford

Ridiculously brilliant band: If you came to WOMAD this year and did not see either set then don't tell anyone!!! It is now officially illegal to miss them in performance.
Sean, Grantham

I went to the fest and saw them! They rocked! i really enjoyed them and its no wonder all of their cd's went on the first day! i was really amazed at how different their music is. It's great!
Ellie Redgrave, Cheshire

'les yeux noirs' combined exquisite musical talent along with expert showmanship to present one of the best live performances i have witnessed. Their choice of deeply emotive music is a cathartic experience.
Bill Keyes, Worcester

They were inspiring and amazing - a must see if you get the chance!
Ann-Marie, Reading
