Tigran Aleksnayan
TIGRAN ALEKSANYAN
 (ARMENIA)

Read an interview with Tigran

See of pictures of their performance at WOMAD

Tigran Aleksanyan is an Armenian who has settled in the UK and is making a name for himself as a master of those wind instruments at the core of the meltingly mournful music of Armenia; the duduk , the zurma, and something known intriguingly as the Armenian apricot flute. Aleksnayan has recently been collaborating with Andrew Cronshaw, the UK's don of gentle folksy experimentalism, whose CD Chrome won the Critics Award at the 2004 BBC World Music Awards.

Tigran will be performong with Mostafa Shams who was born in Tehran into an Azarbaijani family and has been playing the Tonbak, Daf (Gaval) and Naghara (Dohl) since an early age. He has carried out an extensive study of different styles of playing and notating the Tonbak and Daf. He cites both past and present virtuosos of the instrument as influences, such as Hussein Tehrani , Amir Naser Eftettah , Bahman Rajabi , Morteza Ayan , Naser Farhangfar and has performed with many outstanding musicians such as Reza Shaffiian (Santoor), Reza Ghassemi (Sehtar), Esfandiar Monfaredzadeh (Barbat), Zeidolah Toulouie (Tar), Tooraj Kiaras (Vocal) and Rahmatullah Badiei (Kamancheh and Violin).
