ATHENA ANDREADIS

It is a rare joy to hear traditional music gracefully and effectively reworked for the contemporary ear. Greek singer and songwriter Athena Andreadis specialises in sensitive arrangements using non-traditional instruments and, combinations of the new and the ancient which dovetail seamlessly in her superb compositions.

It is the marriage of these elements in performances by Andreadis and her band which have created such a stir on the world music circuit recently. Charlie Gillett led the plaudits after her recent concert at London's Union Chapel. The Independent described Andreadis as "beguiling", and fRoots magazine stated that "Athena and her band will definitely make their mark..."

Jazzy guitar and double bass combine to create the perfect context for a very special voice. Equally comfortable in a variety of styles, Andreadis leads the band expertly yet effortlessly, exuding positive proof of her natural gift and innate talent, and demonstrating what a rare gift she has in her possession.

I recently went to see Athena at the Purcell Rooms. Partly on a friends recommendation and partly because I've listened to this Womad 2005 concert over and over. She is wonderful, I loved her voice, she sings from the heart, and with pure joy. The musicans who played with her were excellent as well. I wish she had a full CD out!

Moody, the essence of non tourist Greek music. The tone was a little flat but the feeling of being in a country of passion & sensitivity was only too clear. Close your eyes and you could be on a Cretan hillside, looking out across the Aegean from the Cyclades or the Ionian sea from Kefalonia. It only makes me want to go back to Greece again !

Loved the set, even though I was standing in the rain. Her voice clutches your heartstrings and she has such a bewitching personality - I was so thrilled to see her after enjoying her Andy Kershawsession so much. It's a shame this recording seems to be in flat mono, rather below Radio 3s usual standards
